No I'm not talking about what you might think.  I came into a good supply of 40 foot Intermountain boxcars in a variety of paintschemes, none of which are appropriate for my timeframe or location.  Since I have started my backdating project I will need a significantly larger number of 40 foot boxcars, so into the vat of 99% alcohol they go.  Sorry for any fans of these roads, but they are being sacrificed for the greater good.

A variety of resin car ends made by Sylvan based on research and patterns by Stafford Swain (A man that all Canadian National modelers owe a debt of gratitude to for all his contributions) along with Stafford's RMC articles about CN boxcars are my guide in this project.  Now to find appropriate photos of these cars in the mid to late 1980's to use as a guide for painting and lettering.

What stripper did you use?

What stripper did you use? Flo... or Nel?

(Serious question, actually.)

Glad you were doing it for fun

Because I think you would be very hungry indeed if you were doing it for profit.

Seriously, 40 is a big number (unless we're talking years, in which case it's a blink of an eye). Are you tackling the pile two at a time or bigger batches?

99% Isopropyl alcohol from the pharmacy

I picked up store brand 99% alcohol from the pharmacy.  The Intermountain paint comes off in sheets after soaking for a bit.  It also seems to loosen the glue on the parts as well so often I have a pile of loose parts to pick out of the container as well.

Isopropyl alcohol works on P2K paint as well, can't say for other company's stuff though.

Quick and easy

I haven't seen anyone put up how quick it is to strip these cars.

Tools of the trade.  Vat of alcohol, toothbrush for fine details, kitchen scrub brush for general scrubbing.

2%5B1%5D.jpg This was after I swiped my finger across the paint once, the car has been in the alcohol bath for about 2 hours. The entire car is stripped clean and parts popped off in under 5 minutes.  Quick and easy.
