It's an Atlas HH660 loco!  The L&N only had one - the one (No. 10) pictured below.  I got it from ebay and will install a DCC decoder (also shipped & on the way).  I'm planning on using it in my little yard to assemble trains to add a little operational interest.  Because of its advanced age in the 1960s and 70s I also eventually will weather it to look old and worn out.  Photo from RRPictureArchives.NET - image contributed by Gary Everhart.

Sweet!

The SP had some like that when I was a little kid, they gave off some steam engine like vibes due to their construction methods( and black paint job  I guess).....DaveB

Absolutely the best looking

Absolutely the best looking engine ever! I had to wait YEARS for Atlas to produce this model-I love it!

I have 3 iterations of a model HH660: one was a very old white metal shell kit from Walthers; I scratch built one (only took five years to finish)... and the last is an Atlas model. It's lettered for the Maine Central but I am going to reletter it for the Portland (Maine) Terminal.

Hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine,

S

Dave B - I'm glad that it

Dave B - I'm glad that it brings back memories.  It will be interesting to see what it sounds like with it's little six cylinder engine!

Michael, I did a search and

Michael, I did a search and didn't find any N scale models - perhaps you could make one with your laser?

@Michael

Bachmann does have a Plymouth MDT switcher in N scale - I bought one on EBay a few years ago. Nice little guy, but I don't think it can be converted to DCC due to limited space for the decoder (an alternative is to use a "transfer" caboose always coupled to the switcher to house the decoder). Because of the short wheel base, going over insulated frogs  can be a problem. I was reading a tip I found on the internet that shows loosening the wheel frame helps with the loosing connection over frogs. I tried it and it did help.

My mistake, HH660 Alco not F-M

I deleted most of what I wrote in this post since I confused the make of prime mover in the HH660.

If it had a non-turbo charged 6 cylinder, I suspect the sound chip for an RS1 would probably be a close match for it.

Nice find.

HH660

Love those Alco's !!!! Rick, are you putting sound in it also ??? And if so...what decoder are you using ?

Sound - yes!

I'll have sound in the loco; however, I won't be able to use my Soundbox as I don't have a decoder (in the Soundbox) for that particular engine.  This won't be a problem as this loco will only be working the yard and won't be out on the mainline.  I'm looking forward to having this little loco on my layout!

Minitrix for Michael

Hi Michael,

While it's not a HH660, Minitrix did do something that looks like it See   http://www.spookshow.net/loco/h1244.html

Good luck getting a chip and sound in there. I bashed one years back to look "something" like the English Electric diesel-electrics at a local steelworks when there was absolutely no local Australian N-scale stuff to be had.

I stand by the performance evaluation in the webpage. It was always a solid performer when out on the exhibition stage. For its time it was a Mercedes at a Ford price.

Atlas did the bigger brother Trainmaster  http://www.atlasrr.com/NLoco/n151644a.htm

I have two of the Atlas HH

I have two of the Atlas HH engines, one with turbo, one without, and they are excellent performers and look and sound great. You will enjoy it!

I always like these HH units

Even since I saw a picture of the HH series units I have kind of wanted to get one. I was really excited when Atlas announced them but  I found out the one I wanted was was actually an HH-1000, maybe someday Atlas will produce them.

I think sound in the unit would be really neat!!

HH1000

Greg:

I think there are very minor differences between the HH600/660 and the 1000. I will be using my Atlas HH660 to represent a Kansas City Terminal Rwy HH1000. Works for me... perhaps take another look and compare the differences and it may work for you too?

Sometimes we lose out by waiting.
