How would you design benchwork for a boxfile? It doesn't have to be a microlayout, though connecting modules would be difficult to connect adequately. I can't make any sense out of any articles I have on file from British magazines, which simply seem to say that the builder just glued a sheet of MDF to the bottom of the box and just strengthened the sides with a thinner sheet.

The quick answer is " an item

The quick answer is " an item that is not, as far as I know, available outside UK, but used by MRs to make micro layouts" - though that is not their intended use. Here is an example  eBay item number 261478079920. A good example of a layout in one is here http://www.pagenumberone.co.uk/layouts/Boxfile/index.htm

Hope it explains what you wanted to know

boxfile = filebox

I can't find the ebay item, but looking at the layout and Google of boxfile I would say we call it a file box in the US, but I don't see the style that is available in the UK.

Most of our file boxes seem oriented toward the hanging folders, the one form the UK is more like a briefcase or possibly a desktop item.

Found this on amazon (click on the picture to go to amazon), can't tell if the top is hinged, but unlikely looking at the picture.

I'd probably start with a lawyer's book case and use the box file for clippings about things I'd like to model. The glass front book cases would be easier to mount on a wall and give more length per unit. Instead of buying book cases or box files it seems easier to just buy some material and create benchwork in whatever configuration fits the space best however? .......DaveB

Boxfile Benchwork

Seems like they don't have any benchwork, they just sit on a table, like table top N-scale modules.

Following the link the OP provided you can get to the rules of the Double O Gauge Boxfile Challenge, under the plans and Ideas one statements says "Once completed the model can live on a bookshelf in it's dust proof box."

TT scale in a 'Guittar' case

Not quite sure this would be considered a box file layout or not.

Officeworks

Type it with a space to find some in Australia.

Length per unit

is not so important as "length between columns". Also I rent and cannot attach things to the wall (the way quad-units were built at the time means that if you did the wall panel may fall off).

And yes, I'm trying to design benchwork to fit the space - the space inside the box file.

Those modules

are benchwork, in that they have an underframe and decking, and often legs.
