Has anyone had experience installing a decoder in a bachmann H-16-44. The split weight in this model really fills the shell so milling the frame is a must. It looks like the speaker will fit under the radiator screens but I like the fan detail, any suggestions?

Decoder install

I installed a Tsunami # 827108 sound decoder in my Bachmann FM 16-44. I did not need to mill for the decoder but did for the speaker. I put the speaker just behind the cab so that i could keep the fan detail, i also milled the right and left front sides to run the pickup wires from the front truck. there was enough room under the shell to place two strips of styrene under the decoder . I will try to post photos but i don't have much luck with them . 44%20003.JPG

Bachman decoder install

Thanks so much for the info, I really like how you did this installation. Do you recall what speaker you used and does the sound come out from the cab area pretty good?

I use a mini oval speaker with an enclosure , you need to sand the bottom of the enclosure to get it to fit under the decoder. Also there is two studs on the under side of the cab. The one by the fans cut as flush as you can , the other one you need to trim it down and tap it . This way you can take a coupler box and screw it in to hold the wires for the capacitor as shown in the photo. Also there are three see through screens just behind the cab that lets the sound out just fine .

Really needed

I really needed to see this one! I've got the same engine and I've been putting off trying to install a decoder because I had heard how hard it was.

As i was working on my other FM H16-44 i realized i gave you some wrong info, the decoder in the photos is #828047 not 827108. Not to be alarmed because they both fit with little milling . With #827108 you need to mill out for the capacitor over the front truck . I believe the speaker i used is # 810103 ( all numbers are soundtraxx ) which i also had to mill out for .The photos here are of decoder # 827108, sorry for the mix up . Both work & sound good, again sorry for the mix up NJWG and Tim

Has anyone done one of these with alternate decoders?

None of the Decoder models listed show up on Soundtraxx's website any longer.

I ordered an H16-44 in CP Maroon and Gray off EBay today and will want to convert it to DCC Sound.  It sounds like Rapido is not going to run theirs any time soon due to lack of orders.   I did my part with all 4 CP numbers pre-ordered.
