In volume 2 of this weathering series, Mike Confalone weathers diesel locomotives. For project 1, Mike weathers the D&H "Gray Ghost" U23B. In part 1, Mike reviews prototype photos and then first highlights the details with an oil shadowing wash, then weathers various hood details using PanPastels. Part one of two.

Watch it now on TrainMasters TV ....

Loco weathering

Hi Mike,

Would you please confirm if you applied a coat of dull-coat before the initial oil wash?

Thanks for an excellent series. Really enjoying it & trying out your techniques..

Wondering the same

I was wondering the same thing...I would assume so in most cases, but Mike explained this loco had a complete repaint from the original factory model, so perhaps not?

Dullcoat...yes......most of the time!

Hi Guys,

Sorry if I ommited that. Yes, this was a factory-painted D&H unit but Atlas used a shade of gray that was much too dark, so I actually repainted the loco and decaled. After that was complete, a HEAVY application of Dullcoat, just like with a freight car. Just mask off the window glass before you do this.

Now, very important. If this was a lightly weathered loco that had been recently repainted, I would NOT apply Dullcoat because the paint needs to still have the sheen to it. Paint only gets ultra flat after years in service. Take a look at the intro to the video shot at the Madrid engine terminal. There is an Allagash GP38-2 (bright yellow) spotted there. That loco has Scalecoat II paint (heavy gloss) and light weathering...NO Dullcoat applied on the body, but just a bit on the roof where the paint would lose its luster quite quickly with all the intense heat and soot.

Any other questions, just ask!

Somewhere I have a slide of the engine after it was transferred to the MEC and the D & H logo was swapped out to the MEC logo. Beautiful job of weathering as usual great work.

Masking the windows before the Dullcote

Mike,

Great video!  I was wondering what you use (or other people use) to easily mask the windows before applying the Dullcote.  Do you use a liquid mask, or masking tape?  Thanks!

Masking

Rick,

Just plan 'ol blue painters' tape, cut to size for each window. Easy!

Is it just me?

I'm up to the part of the video where Mike describes the loco around 7 minutes in and the audio is a little wonkey. Is it just me?

not just the audio, but video as well

I finally switched over to the alternate player and things went well.  Not sure if that was because a lot were viewing at the time or what.
