First post here. Just getting back into the world of HO after a very long absence. I have a few locos (not dcc) which are in need of maintenance and even restoration, and stumbled onto the roller stand concept. I have discovered the Bachrus and Micro versions at 50+ dollars, and then found these http://shop.crest-electronics.net/CRE50102-STATIONARY-ROLLERS-HO-TEST-STAND-4-PK-CRE50102.htmwhich look very much the same as others, only half the cost. My question is: Does anyone know anything about Crest Electonics?  Or is this too good to be true?

Thanks

Terry

Immediately I see the CRE

Immediately I see the CRE stands used large button head screws to hold the bearings.  Maybe they won't interfere with the flanges, but compared to Bachrus the quality difference is evident.  Bachrus looks to be a more refined product.

Rollers

Good price. Micro Mark sells then unassembled for $49.95. They look to be the same.

Very similar to the Bachmann

Very similar to the Bachmann HO rollers which I've had  for several years with no problem or complaint

Thanks for the replies. Tells me that the roller stands are a good idea for testing.

Does anyone have experience dealing with Crest Electronics?

Yes, a good idea

I have a set of Micro that I use integrally in all tests.  Really good for warm up running.  Also good for examining current draw variation.  A lot of variation implies something is causing the motor torque to wobble.  Usually implies a need for maintenance.

I'd feel terrible if it was as this was your idea

Let me know if I need to share!

ps. Speaking of sharing, I've had an idea of a traveling passenger car for a while - sort of the "Traveling Pants" for mr's. Who wants it first?

Traveling Passenger Car

Neil-That is a great idea.  Start a new thread about this, and I predict you will get dozens of replies very quickly.   I suggest you set up a blog that posts photos of each layout that the passenger car visits.  Good luck figuring out the paint scheme and road name.

re: Last one

Well, I got my shipping notice from them for the rollers, so I guess we're ok...

It was meant as a joke, but after looking at the price cuts on a lot of the other stuff, I began to wonder if they are closing out...

So does someone want to do a review of the stand?  I model steam and have a lot of 2-6-6-2,  2-6-6-6 and 2-8-8-2locos I assume I would need to buy two 4 wheel units to get the job done?

The wrong invoice?

Hmm, that sure is odd!  Not sure I've ever heard of that happening before.

wrong invoice

Yes, it is odd, and I've never had it happen to me till now. The fellow who said he had ordered a set just before me (umauma rr) was/is the likely recipient, since our orders were probably within hours of each other, and I can't imagine there are thousands of orders per day for these.

Not a problem; just a minor mystery.

Don't wait for me to review them; I am up to my ears in a new kitchen, building cabinets, etc. They do appear to be well made, and should serve the purpose quite satisfactorily.

Crest Electronics

Crest is a spinoff of the electronics products from AristoCraft (RIP - Sort of) and has picked up some of the more profitable AC products. The AC link http://www.aristocraft.com/ will redirect you to the Crest site.

I have used AC HO and Gage 1 roller sets for over a decade, finding the roller bearing based design very easy to use. The AC (Crest) design is not as clean looking as the cast parts of Bachmann rollers (which I also use), but are just as reliable and effective when working on the bench. Just like wheels and track you have to keep the roller bearing and frames clean to ensure good contact, but it is a H--- of a lot easier to diagnose problems on rollers than trying to chase a problem loc around a layout (especially in the garden).

I recently Purchased the Bachuras Rollers stands and Computer interface for speed matching.

Its a great little device for either speed matching or adjusting sounds while a loco is moving.

Invoice

I did get mine about the same day but didn't think to look at the invoice beyond the price paid! The four seem nicely made but I wonder about how to support pony or trailing trucks. Once I have time to cut them into a space it seems as though attaching to the top of the rails may not be the best solution without something between the rails for other, non-powered rails. I think having a small "trestle" over the lower rails may be an interesting (and attractive) solution to this but may restrict moving to rollers to accommodate other locos. Any ideas here would be appreciated.

See that is,my issue I model

See that is,my issue I model the C&O and that means large steam engines so what do I do about the tender the trailing truck the lead truck and of course up to 8 sets of drivers.

The tender and the trailing truck is easy.

Measure a piece wood so it is level with the rollers and as long as your largest tender.  If you can groove it to sit down over the rails it will give it more stability.  Glue down another piece of track on the opposing side.  Solder alligator clips on wires, solder the wires to the rail or using thin scrap brass or phosphorus bronze solder that to the track and let it run down to the grooves below.

Press this new assembly down on a straight section of track making electrical contact.  Could be on top of your programming track.  Think of a track sandwhich with the wood between.  Space your rollers.  Place the engine and tender down.  The tender sits on your new assembly, which is powered.  Your engine sits on the rollers.  Make your final adjustments to the spacing of the rollers.  When done, remove your rollers and assembly.

Excuse my crude drawing. The solid black is wood with track laid on top. The high area on left is the same height as the rollers and is to sit the tender and trailing truck on. The crosshatched piece is movable and is to support the front truck. Adjust the horizontal dimensions to suit your locomotives. This would not be critical. The height of the support for the tender and front truck would have to be adjusted so they are the same height as the rollers. Use as many rollers as you need.
