I initially started my blog about moving into a condo in Toronto and the restraints of real estate and building a proto/freelance railroad based on short lines running in Southern Ontario.

Now we are moving to Hamilton and I have a basement to extend my plans.

The idea is the same 'any town Southern Ontario'. I've included a harbour/port scene for my love of ships. Where we'll be living there are ports just near us in Hamilton. But my scene will reflect Goderich and Port Colborne. As well, i've extended my initial plan with the Cargill Grain plants at Courtland, Ontario and i've got a pub called 'The Flying Scotsman now in my current layout.

Here's my blog about the initial layout in Toronto: https://forum.mrhmag.com/journals-was-blogs-891775

And here's how it will fit into the basement in Hamilton:

Excellent plan

A deceptively simple track plan. You have many possibilities with the several small yards.  Six to nine cars is a full train and it permits two operators. you also have some real mechanical challenges with three pass - throughs.

Thanks Doug

Thanks Doug,

Yes the plan opens me up to have mainline trains. A run though and CN local to service the interchange yard as well as future industries to be added. I still need to get the tape measure out for the entrance lift out on the left, an electrical box and a cold room for another lift out on the right of the layout but the design is conservative to accomodate the dimensions.

There are a couple of challenges.. the backdrop hiding the staging behind my initial layout (the colour designed portion of the layout) and hiding the edges. It's possible at the left end having a double sided curved backdrop split between two highway bridges. The other side possibly a water tower, cel or radio tower. Any further ideas would be appreciated.

Btw, I like your idea 'Returning Trails to rails' and the 'what if' scenario of prototype modeling.

cheers,

Brad
