Never having tried it before, I thought I'd try a consist today (taking a break from building to actually run some trains).

Did the Google search to see how it's done - to speed match, most say start with CV5.  Turns out 2 of the 3 locos I want to consist don't have a CV5, or at least it doesn't show up in JMRI.  (I use JMRI to program my decoders rather than my cab.)

My goal was to speed match them as closely as possible and I can't figure out how to do it without CV5.  Use the speed table perhaps?  I've never touched that.

Here's what I have:

NCE PowerCab

Atlas GP-38 - Lenz LE063XF (as reported by JMRI) - No CV5

Atlas GP-40 - NCE AN12A0 (as reported by JMRI) - Has CV5

Atlas SD-24 - Four Function Dual Mode (as reported by JMRI) - No CV5

I've used JMRI to program the starting voltage and lights without issue for all of my locos, and even use my iPhone as a wireless cab when I plug my layout into my computer.

What procedure do I use to speed match these locos?

I'm not a DCC expert but I'd start with the basics by going online and finding a copy of your decoder's instructions and see what cv's controls start, mid,and high speed then put in values that make them all run as close as possible to the same speed. If their mechanism DC speeds are well matched it should be easy to consist them. Most of my locos consist without playing with the cv's , the couplers take care of any slight speed mis-match....DaveB

I've looked at the speed tables option

Thanks for your reply, Dave.

couple of my locos, at least to my eye, move at different speeds making me nervous to lash them up.

I've looked at other ways of speed matching.  Watched a couple of videos about how to use speed tables.  It looks easy using JMRI (never tried speed tables before).

I'll try it later today and report back here.

JMRI Speed Tables Did The Trick

Easy as pie!  Can't believe I've never looked at them before.  I was able to speed match my locos even without one of those fancy speedometer devices.

Good to hear.  I think most things in the hobby are like that, we spend more time worrying about how to do them than we do actually doing it once we decide to try :> ) ........DaveB
