Took new N Kato SD90/43Mac out of it's box today - placed on track with controller on 00 [have Digitrax DCC system] and the loco just immediately moved off. Controller had no effect - tried both UT4 and DT402. Loco only stopped by switching off power. Have never had this happen before. I have a decoder on order but it is about 2 weeks away. Any clues? Thanks. Tom

Analog or DCC

Dear Tom,

Is the loco current analog (no decoder) or DCC-equipped?

If "analog", I wouldn't put it on any form of DCC-powered track, as a matter of principle.

It is possible that by setting the Digitrax system to "00" you may have invoked the hybrid "Zero Bit Stretching" mode, which is a motor-cooking way of faking-out the DCC signal so it appears capable of driving a single analog loco...

...however, as above, if it doesn't have a decoder already installed I'd make strenuous efforts NOT to place the loco on DCC-powered tracks.

Analog or DCC

Dear Prof,

Thanks for your input. No decoder installed as yet. Will keep it off the track till the decoder arrives. Tom

Most Kato are now DCC

Hi Tom,

It seems that although you had the system set for "Analog Mode" there was enough constant voltage applied to the rails for the motor to operate. This could possibly mean there is a problem with the system when in "Analog Mode".

As Prof stated above I would also recommend that you refrain from placing an "Analog" loco on DCC powered rails.

Paul

Decoder to hand - BUT

I think that my DB150 has failed. I have a separate programming track and now following on the problem re analogue loco I am not getting any response with any decoder equipped loco. I have a DT402 and a UT4 and neither can get through to any of the decoder equipped locos. My DB150 was purchased many years ago - the Users Manual states   DCC starter set "Genesis" There is power in the rails on the programming track.
