I have an Atlas RS1 with ESU Lok.  I have CV3 and 4 set to a momentum of 200 each.  This morning when I fired her up, those settings were lost.  Now, I can't do anything.  It just sits and idles.  I go into CV8 and set a value to 8 for a factory reset and nothing happens.  I put in 3 on my NCE and that doesn't work.  I tried with the previous engine number programmed in (#200) and that doesn't work.  I'm not sure what to do now since I can't factory reset and start over.  I'm going out for a run.  I'll check back later to see if anyone has an answer or if anyone is experiencing the same problems.  Thanks!

What DCC system ... and do you have JMRI?

What DCC system do you have? And do you have JMRI? Also, which LokSound decoder? LokSound Select, LokSound Select micro, or LokSound Select Direct? Is this a V4.0 LokSound decoder? I do know sound decoders can be a bear to program - using programming on the main is the most reliable. Did you do the reset on the programming track or on the main? If you have DecoderPro - or better yet, a LokSound Programmer - you can save off loco settings and do a total reset back to your good settings by reloading the decoder from a saved off loco settings file. Programming on the programming track is tricky because sound decoders suck power like crazy to keep things charged up, and the programming track is low power on an older DCC system. You need a programming track booster like the PowerPax to help alleviate the problem with sound decoders on the programming track. Also, the NCE PowerCab (starter system) is the one DCC system designed after sound decoders became popular, so it's the one DCC system that does a good job of programming sound decoders.

Program on the main

It is an Atlas factory install.  I think that would be the select.  I use NCE.

Do you do the reset by programming on the main?

Are you doing the reset by programming on the main? Or on the programming track?

I don't have a program track

I don't have a program track.  I just program on the main.  My layout is a simply one loco operation so I don't need a program track.  I keep things simple.

trash it

I guess I'll have to trash it for now.  I'll pull something else out of storage.

Contact Atlas

Contact Atlas. If you buy LokSound decoders separately, they have a 3 year warranty. Since this is an OEM decoder, you need to send the loco to Atlas for repair.

Atlas only has a 90 day warranty. For the money, it's almost better to replace the loco board yourself and get the 3 year LokSound warranty - or pay to have it installed for you by a skilled installer like Mike Rose (MRH Getting Real Column).

Replacing the loco's board with a LokSound Select Direct decoder is not that hard, TMTV has a 3-part video mini-series that shows Matt Herman of ESU doing this very install in real time (takes about 90 min). It's $2.99 to purchase the entire video series if you're not a TMTV member.

Finally, let me say that I have 65 locos with DCC and I've only had one or two fail like this. Most just run and run and run - and the performance beats DC all to pieces - even for one loco.

Thanks!

Thanks Joe.  I wish I knew what caused this to happen.

Power Cab

Since you have only the one loco, set the PowerCab to "Use on Program Track" and try resetting in that mode.

I have had decoders get "confused" and refuse to respond on the main track mode, but which have responded to the Program track mode and everything is once again good. I have two locomotives and just removed one of them when this fix was necessary.

Maybe it will work. Maybe you've already tried it.

Don't worry, I won't go back

Don't worry Joe, I won't go back.  I'm just frustrated is all.  I have plenty of other locos to run.  I'm going to just purchase a new board and replace it myself.  I edited my "trash it" post above because what I originally said was just out of frustration.  This loco has been acting funny for the last 3 days or so.  It kept loosing the CV settings I applied.  It'd run fine and then the next morning when I turn on my NCE system, It'd loose all of the momentum settings in CV3 and CV4.  Then today, nothing.  It sits and idles just fine but no horn, no bell, no chug up, and it won't move.  Just idles.

I like a happy ending

Superb, didn't think of the program track setting. Good advice - and proves the comments I've read on DCC forums that the NCE PowerCab is one of the best sound decoder programming systems out there on the programming track because they designed it to provide the power level sound decoders need (unlike the other older DCC systems that all pre-date sound decoders). Ah, a happy ending ...

Everything is working!!!!

Thanks, Dave.  It runs now.  All sounds working just fine.  I reset to CV8 to 8 on Program Track but didn't have any luck programming the CV's on program track so I went back and set all CV's again on Program on the Main.  So far it works!!!!

Weird,ain't it?

Sometimes I think these decoders develop personalities of their own. Don't know why they seem always to be the personalities of cantankerous old men.

Glad it worked!
