Matt Herman from ESU shows off a locomotive with a LokSound decoder configured per the desires of modeler Mike Confalone, owner of the HO-scale Allagash Railway.  Matt discusses the features of the Loksound Select sound decoder and how the sounds and control relate to real-world locomotive operation.

Will there be more?

Matt

Enjoyed your presentation of the "Confaloned" ESU decoder. Like Mike I'm glad to see that the functions for setting the prime mover sound to full throttle and idle are being offered in this sound file.

Will these features be offered in other versions? I'm particularly interested in the 2nd generation diesel files, such as the EMD SD40-2, SD40, SD35 and the GE U23, B30-7 and so on.

ESU has become my decoder of choice with sound files that truly emulate the prototype. Thank you for your attention to detail.

"Confaloned" settings?

Thank you for this video series.
Mike C
- What are your CV-settings for your ESU-decoders?
- How is your UT4s set up for ESU-decoder?

How does the settings differs between the Tsunami settings as you showed in the book series?

Are you now running with a mix of Tsunami and ESU decoders?
Or are you going to standarize on one of those - or some complete different?

I am just curious to know. Living far from the land of EMD, ALCOs and GEs I am no expert in diesel sound.
Just want to do the best I can. Althoug from time to time I can hear an EMD 567 engine running in a diesel from NOHAB, like the legendary NSB Di3.
But like you, I do use Digitrax UT4 radio throttles. So I am interested in how you use them.

Thank you for sharing so much information.

Looking for more!

Really pleased with Matt's attention to detail and stepping up to work with Mike.

This video was more of a feature overview. I was hoping for more programming detail. We'd like to know what Mike's chosen function arrangement is, among other things.

Thanks!

Are "Confalone" Features Available?

I've watched the video several times and there is much to like in this decoder.  If I'm understanding correctly, certain sound effects such as a rapid increase or decrease of engine speed depending on the rate of opening/closing of throttle, and the ability to use manual notching "on the fly" are built into this decoder.  Other things, like function mapping and lighting effects are simple selections made by the user.  Am I correct in these assumptions?

If so, does the current sound file listed on the ESU website contain these updates?  Or are these features contained in the firmware of the decoder?  Are the functions set up per the video?

And finally, will these updates be applied to all decoders?

Thanks in advance.

Some answers

The only sound file that supports all the features Matt demonstrated is the *Alco 12cyl 251B* file. However, I spoke with Matt and he said this is an experiment to see how popular this kind of thing is. If it proves popular, then more such updates will be done. As to whether or not this gets applied to everything, the jury's still out on this with corporate, although Matt surely would like to see that happen.

Keep in mind this is for the US market and it's being driven somewhat by Mike Confalone and his passion for really good sound features.

As for all the features Matt demonstrated being in this Alco decoder file - the answer is *many but not all features*. To get ALL the features takes some additional programming and that's what Mike has done. If we could get Mike and / or Matt to describe these additional programming steps, that would be great.

"Confaloned" CV Settings

I'm a convert to ESU Loksound and love the videos we get from Matt.  I haven't seen anywhere any further information relative to CV settings Mike C. uses to get the awesome and realistic locomotive effects.  Has this information been posted anywhere on the MRH site?  The ability to operate model locomotives the way Mike does using DCC sound on the Allagash is what truly inspires me in this hobby.  Thanks also to MRH staff for putting out a great publication every month!

The new "Full Throttle" versions...

...of Loksound sound files will allow you to achieve all these effects. The sound files are here (anything with FT in the file name):

http://projects.esu.eu/projectoverviews/2?page=1&count=10&order=date&type=all&cat=2

There's a description of FT features here:

http://www.esu.eu/en/products/loksound/loksound-full-throttle-features/

and some video about it on TrainMasters-TV as well as here:

Enjoy

I think

that (???) milw502 was actually asking about the customization that Mike has done to his locos.  I'd be interested in that myself.  That Geep unit with the "ruptured" air horn for instance.  I know he has set the speed ranges down, and moved a lot of functions around.  Mike C, I'd love it if you'd email me the file of that Geep!

OK I get it, sorry.

For some reason I had thought that this video showed the "sound realism" thinking by Mike, Matt and others that led to the FT sound features being implemented into production by Loksound. So did Mike use Loksound V4 not Select? I would be very interested to learn about the process of recording and programming custom sounds such as the broken horn. I do have 1 V4 decoder and took a brief look at the custom sound area in Lokprogrammer and felt out of my depth in about 5 seconds flat!

I'm guessing

that he used a V4 at least in that unit.  I'm in the same boat as you when trying to change sounds.
