Modeling rockwork

I've just joined and have been enjoying the video series with Miles and Lionel.  Having tried applying plaster to XPS foam in the past with limited success, my plaster initially slid off, i was wondering what technique Miles used.  It looks like there is a coating on his foam but I don't recall a mention of any surface prep in the video.  Does anyone know what was used?  Thanks
