KATY CONVERTED SOME AS16 TO EMD POWERED UNITS WITH DYNAMIC BREAKS.  I HAVE SOME OLDER STEWARD AS16 MODELS TO CREATE THAT CONVERSION.  I HAVE BEEN HAVING NOT MUCH LUCK FINDING INFORMATION SO I CAN CONVERT THE MODELS FROM STANDARD AS16 TO THE UNITS WHICH KATY UPGRADED.

Heffalumps

There was an article (perhaps in MR) in the 1970's called "Horrible Heffalumps", that was about mixed mfr. conversions.  You might try a search for Heffalump locos".  I'm at work, with search rule limitations, so all I found was a copyrighted for-sale photo of a KATY RS3 with a GP7 long hood.  I know that KATY had a reputation for making do with what they had, with some "interesting" results.

sources found using heffalumps and the leads from that reference

thanks,

went to wikipedia "M-K-T RAILROAD"  and there is a photo of RS3 m.  these are the alco rs3 which had emd engins and dynamic brakes with gp9 long hood.  clicked on the photo lead to more information.  also C&NW roster of locomotives showed the M-K-T RS3 m sold to them with some of their history.

AS16 conversion

There is a photograph of this conversion in Kalmbach's book "the second Diesels spotters guide on page 441. Basically shows the long hood of the AS16 replaced with a long GP9 hood with dynamic brake blister. Road number carried is 130.
