Thanks to Arizona Rock and Mineral my model railroad dream will become a reality. I am doing a product review on their ballast and ground cover which will be featured on my 2'x5' switching layout. Construction will begin Monday and I can't believe it is really happening!!!

I like your trackplan

But I hope you are planning on a table or shelf. That ballast is going to hurt your bare feet

Arizona Rock and Mineral Review

The Review:

ge(152).jpeg

Item: CNW Pink Granite Ballast

Photo:ge(153).jpeg

Consistency: Rough yet extremely fine

Overall Opinion: Overall this makes a great ballast it was in my opinion the perfect consistency and granule size for ballasting with great results. The product was easy to work with and I had no trouble smoothing it over the ties unlike some other manufacturers I have used. There was a great mix of colors in the small amount even shown. The color also matched prototype photos. Overall this was a great piece of scenery (just like all of the materials).

Item: Industrial Dirt

Photo: ge(154).jpeg

Consistency: Very fine almost powder

Review: Have not used yet

Item: Dessert Sand

Photo:ge(155).jpeg

Consistency: Fine with pebbles mixed in

Review: This was a great piece of dirt suitable for a desert scene, I was originally going to go with a grassy look but I must say this sold me on dessert. I never even considered doing desert but this sold me on that side of things. The mix of sizes of pebbles and powder worked wonders on the model and helped give the scene a more realistic look.

Item: Earth

Photo: ge(156).jpeg

Consistency: A powder like the Industrial Dirt

Notes: Another great piece of scenery I highly recomend this and if the rest of the AR&M products are like this then any other of their products.

Looks Good

I will have to give their stuff a try. Sounds like it is finer than Woodland Scenics stuff.

A hint... to having better looking track is find some rust colored paint and run it along the sides of your rail. I just use an old brush like a 0 or a 00. If you hit the top of the ties next to the rails that is ok. That is where the tie plates and spikes are, also rusty. I realize that doing this in school makes for some time limits so could be something to keep in mind for later. Oh and do it before putting down ballast.

Another hint...Take the whole

Another hint...Take the whole thing outside and spray the rails with Rustoleum camouflage brown paint, then hit the rail sides with rust and grease colors. Make sure to mask the switch points so the paint dosent stick them in place. Randomly paint some of the crossties with light washes of grey paint.

Thanks,

I did some switch ballasting on Friday it was definitely much more difficult and took patience.
