Foam, lovely pink foam in California

By AndreChapelon - Posted on 24 March 2010

We're re-roofing our house and that's required multiple trips to Home Depot in Monterey. On one of those trips, I was walking down the Insulation aisle and what to my wondering eyes did appear: pink Owens Corning extruded foam in several thicknesses. I don't know when they started carrying it, but if it's available here at HD it should be available elsewhere in California.

Rejoice all, for we have reached the promised land.

I know what you mean - I couldn't have built my layout without it.........

The subject title says it all. There used to be some libelous rumors going around that the stuff was outlawed here in Lotus Land. Not true. It was just damnably hard to fine because most builders used something else. Apparently that's changing. In addition to the roof we're putting on, there's another roofing job just up the street and they've added 2x4's to the original sub-roof to build in space for foam insulation (which was lying in abundance at the job site). Now that they've got the second sub-roof on, the foam's gone.

The stuff ain't cheap when you price it out for insulation. We would have needed 60 4x8 sheets of foam had we done the same thing as above. That would have come out to over $1500 after sales tax. The 20 squares of shingles we used cost us about the same.

I have mixed feelings about the whole thing. Yeah, we now have a roof that will outlast us. OTOH, all that lovely money could have been spent on trains.

Fellows,

The pink foam can be had from Home depot. The Orange coloured big box DIY. Lowes , the "other " one here in the west does not stock Owens Corning. Sometimes this feeds the idea that it is hard to find or cannot be had. They also no longer sell 2' x 8' , one inch thick sheets  , these replaced by 4' x 8' sheets . The larger sheets are not very expensive . Seems like the last one I bought was $12 or so . I cut it on the table saw which is very nice unless you get off line and it grabs , it shoots off little beads of foam from the kerf ,  So watch your eyes . I do not buy the two inch thick anymore so cannot comment on them .
