In many model railroad forums, including MRH, you find discussions on whether or not model railroading could be considered a kind of art. Anyway, here is an example that a model railroad layout could at least inspire people to create a piece of art. The picture below, I got from Russian dieselpunk artist Inago. It's part of a collaborative art project on a fictitious country called Atlantic Republic, which is located on islands in the North Atlantic Sea. Since they have railroads in the Atlantic Republic, this might also be an interesting subject for the complete fantasy thread here in the MRH forum.

As Inago wrote me, this picture was directly inspired by a photo I posted on Flickr and on deviantart (where he found it). It shows a scene on my TT scale boxfile layout:

Maybe, one day I will try an opposing approach by making a model railroad scene after a picture made by an artist.

scene after a picture made by an artist.

reminds me of late 80s (can't be more specific). Model Railroader had an article by THE John Armstrong. He did a 3D model of the picture Nighthawks (by Hopper?) and put it on his railroad.

Model Railroading is Art?

In my world it is.  Model railroading is in many ways an art form. We have many, many modelers who are and do create works of miniature art.  I have no doubt in this case the reversal of art forms would be entirely possible.  Very cool!!!

Yes, DrJolS

I checked the MR index and archive and it was January 1989.  Mr. Armstrong built a very nice O scale model of Edward Hoppers painting "Nighthawks."

Interesting. I've done one

Interesting. I've done one painting from my layout, but that was some time ago. Wouldn't mind another crack at it some day.

Having the table turned

As suggested at the end of my blog entry, I have now turned the table and made a model photo scene after a piece of art. The photo scene on one of my TT scale dioramas was inspired by the painting 'The last station' by the artist Filip Dudek, see http://5ofnovember.deviantart.com/art/the-last-station-424186988. That painting shows a dystopian near-future fantasy scene. While the diesel engine in the painting resembles a Russian 2ТЭ10, I used an M62, which also fits into the scene. For the dystopian look, I applied a Clyde effect.
