Does anyone have experience with applying HO scale brass numbers to Steam Loco cabs? I have two brass locos and a CNR NW2 that I would like to apply them to. The numbers on the NW2 goes on the front below the grill. I was wondering if I could use the existing decals on the steam locos and just apply the brass numbers over them. I have no dea if this is possible; gluing to a decal.

Get in touch with Andy

Hi Deemiorgos:

Get in touch with Andy Malette at MLW Services...

Andy works mostly in S, but sells etches for the brass numbers. I assume yours came from him - either directly or indirectly. He can tell you how to apply them.

Cheers!

photo etching?

I'll guess that you did this by photo etching some thing sheet brass? That's how the ship modellers do it (but they're usually a lot smaller at 1/350 or 1/700).

@CandOfan

The etched brass CN numbers were produced by the CNLines SIG, now known as the CNR Historical Association.  They were available for many years from the SIG; not sure if there are any sets still available.  Many must reside in various hobbyist's file drawers.

Did you end up gluing over the decals?

Did you glue them over decals, or remove the decals and fasten them on?  Did you glue or attach them some other way?  I think I would have soldered them to the brass before painting, and then put a thin coat of something like grease over the face of the numbers before painting and decaling the model. The biggest concern that I would have with gluing the #s to decals or paint is that if they get bumped, the paint may let go and the brass #s fall off.

Russ, I removed the decals

Russ,

I removed the decals and repainted the cabs. The decals on the Mikado were factory and oversized.

I glued the brass numbers on with this type of glue

_8629(2).JPG

and after put a gloss finish of Tamiya over them.

I tested 4 other glues and Clear Gorilla glue had best results for gluing to a glossy surface. I couldn't pry any of the numbers off with my finger nail, toothpick, or tip of an X-Acto blade. I had to dig very hard with the blade in under the edge to pry/pop them off.

When applying the numbers, I put a tiny piece of the wax used for swimming ear plugs or putty, and put it on a tooth pic to pick up the numbers and to place them. The glue doesn't dry fast so you can adjust the numbers for several minutes if you need to.

I used an iPad as a tool to align the numbers.

These look fabulous

as is your attention to detail.

The use of the iPad for leveling is very clever.

Mike,Thanks.First I just

Mike,

Thanks.

First I just used the iPad to double check it from a different perspective, as looking at the numbers on the cab for so long can be deceiving and you end up second guessing too much. Then later I used the cropping tool to put in the lines.

The most important thing is what ever you are trying to align, must be in the centre of the shot and the iPad parallel to the surface of the subject.

Cheers.
