Placing this here as I'm definitely new to signals (slightly less new to the rest of the hobby, mind).

I'm looking at adding a searchlight signal (at most two) to what is effectively a 'small n scale switching layout'. I put that in quotes because it's really a scenic area connected to quite a lot of bare staging, some of which may or may not be getting fully modeled later on.

I've had a look at the Atlas signalling system and the Showcase Miniatures range of signals. These look like real works of art, but they're hi-tech, and electronics is definitely one of my weaknesses. The Atlas signalling system looks designed to be set up along a substantial stretch of mainline and uses block detection, and interactions between signals - I'm pretty sure that's out of reach of where I am now. Meanwhile the Showcase Miniatures range uses a special multicoloured LED which they say is very fragile, and considering that I'd be having these shipped over to me in the UK, the added expense and time if I mess up is offputting.

What I'm looking for then is a model signal with LEDs that I can drop into a drilled hole in my layout, and manually turn from green to red as and when. I was wondering: does anyone manufacture such a product? Product descriptions and manuals for the Atlas and Showcase lines suggest they could be set up in this way but don't give clear instructions (no gripe, as I'm behind the curve on electronics compared to most rr modellers).

The signals by NJ international look like they would fit the bill, but then I'm even having trouble finding a wiring diagram to make a simple red/green/off switch.

Any light (green or red) that anyone can shed on this matter would be much appreciated!

lets see

Tomar, NJ International, and BLMA all make N scale search light signals that are worth looking at.  You can also find them on eBay from a variety of sellers.  If you want quick and cheap, but reliable (I have a friend who had dozens of their 3 aspect signals):

Building your own?

Are you willing to scratchbuild your own signals?  Similar to the link that Phil posted above, there is a modeler on Trainboard who built his own signals using brass tubing, 3mm LEDs (filed to the shape of the signal head) and trimmed LED clips.  If you are not worried about the signal being prototypically accurate, these can be a huge savings.  Best thing is you should be able to get everything locally.

These were built by Rich C who owns the Sand Springs Railway in N scale.

Thanks everyone

As ever, not much more to add but thanks to all! I'm in talks with a local supplier of signal control mechanisms/mate who says that by the end of these talks I will have come round to the idea of doing signals properly.
