Here are some photos of my model Railroadz layouts in Trainz 12. One of them is a small oval while the other is more of a work in progress but NG.

Getting the creativity going

Hi,

I run Trainz myself every now and then - great for getting the creative juices flowing - especially when reality calls for more money and space than what is available...

Yep, sadly I can't get on

Yep, sadly I can't get on very often but I get a lot done when I do. The finished one was done in about 5 hours total most of which was making the benchwork.

SP and S

I think Trainz is a quick way to work out layout design elements. Once the proportions and car lengths are worked out, moving on to a CAD program for accuracy works well.

Here's a quick stab at the SP & S from the current (Oct 2015) issue. The siding lengths are off, but once they are corrected it'll be a fun way to experience the author's design without actually building the layout. Same goes for Clark Probst's mill. It would be even quicker to work up.  gs

Yep, I do enjoy it and find

Yep, I do enjoy it and find new tools every day. I used to never figure out to use inclines with matching height for the ground but one day voila! I found that tool. That layout looks good so far. All built in or DLS? If built in would you mind sending it to me looks like a fun one  And for the fascia, sky-blue backdrop, door, walls and table legs I may get the links to them but some are from the person directly.

useful and fun - what could be better?

I also use Trainz for testing layout elements for operability - the design of the town on the layout I'm building in my classroom went through several changes as a result of those sessions. The fact that both the building and operating of those "virtual models" is an enjoyable process complements the brass and homosote part of the project.

Plus, running with a Raildriver console and a good subwoofer is a thrill.

I agree completely, and on

I agree completely, and on another note you are th person who inspired me to start the club at my school

also how I wish I had those last two things.....

Am I the only one who doesn't get this?

I'm reminded of a video game where the players are in a paintball match. A simulation of a simulation?

That's what this feels like. You have a train sim but you're 'simming' a model of the real thing and not the real thing itself?

I get it if you're doing it as a planning tool for a layout you intend to build. But a virtual model of a model of something, sorry, but that's just plain silly to me...

Well if one is doing it right the model of the real thing and the model of the model  should look the same :> ) .As a layout planning tool these simulations seem idea.....DaveB.

@p51

I do it this way because I was A: bored of regular layouts/railroads in Trainz. B: I have no space or time for a layout that is "real"

Great work so far!

You're showing great progress, and it's also nice to see folks still using some of my MRR Trainz assets.

Cheers!

Thanks,

so you are the one who made that stuff. I did not expect to find you on here, great job it is really a fun thing to do. Building the table takes the most time though

Not everything...

I didn't create all the assets, just those marked from "Hack" or "3DTrains".

I like your work...

But, I noticed you confused the letter Z with the letter S. In English, plural words typically end with S.  ... not Z

No it is not a mistake..

..the game is called TrainZ so that means these are Model Railroadz.

Though thanks for the complement.

not "silly"

Model railroading itself can be considered "silly" to many.  After all we are grown men (and women) playing with toy trains.  The nice thing with simulators is the cost.  We are not all in the same financial situation.  Many of us love trains, but cannot afford to participate in the hobby.  Simulators give us an inexpensive way to PLAY with trains.  Please help promote this form of modeling not bash it.   For many of us, it is all we've got.

That is exactly my though, I

That is exactly my though, I can build a full layout (and begin running trains) within 4hours for the cost of around $30 dollars. For me when I do not have the time or money, this is perfect.

On a personal note - like

On a personal note - like many of the older fellows here, I left model railroading in the 80's and returned just a couple of years ago. For a long time my only real participation in the hobby was reading the magazines in what little spare time I had. I started experimenting and playing with a couple of the simulators about 10 years ago. That fueled my interest in the hobby until I retired and had more time to get into the physical modeling.

Yeah, it's a little silly...

Hey, I get if you don't have the room for a layout. That was me until very recently.

But if you're gonna 'sim' a train, why on earth wouldn't you sim a full-sized train instead? Using a simulator of a model of the real thing is certainly skirting the field of silly, if not going into the middle of it.
