LVN

There have been a few changes made to the LVN.  The team track has now got a propane tank facility (Shelby sub gold).  The parts distribution centre now is an open loading dock for transport trucks and the track beside it handles a chemical storage facility which includes chlorine and sulphur (Wainwright Sub blue).   Also there is a built in timesaver in Richmond yard (Red). The future industrial area now has buildings and station (Wainwright Sub blue).  The concept is a freelance railroad that is post 2000 running from Shelby Montana to Edmonton Alberta and has both CN and BNSF trackage rights.  The design is a double track main, however, during operations the one main is typically used as a pull back track for local switching.  Typically there are five engineers each with a trainman to handle the turnouts and car handling.  It operates as part of a round robin group called the FNGers (Friday Night Group) in Ottawa Ontario Canada.  The focus is typically coal drags, grain trains, tank train, intermodal, mixed freight and passenger.

The design came about by first taping off the room indicating where the benchwork (100 2x4s) would go and the isle ways. I wanted them wide for the operators to pass each other.  Also I liked switching so there had to be lots of industry as well as classification tracks.  To create distance between towns the operators must take their train around the layout three times.  This involves meets and seeking permission to use tracks otherwise occupied by other operators.  Also mainline locomotives  are sent to servicing and local switching is done by lighter power.

The sessions last for about 2.5 hours and then its time for food and refreshments.

Looks Like

you have a pretty well balanced track plan - though I'm curious about what looks like a major yard cutting across the center of the layout.  Is that visible staging, or is it supposed to be a division point on the line?

This is a division point.

This is a division point.  The double track main runs down the middle and there are two passing sidings and three classification tracks.

From the other end

From this end you can see Richmond yard on the left.  It is a time saver.

Got it

Thanks!  It looks really grand.  Hope you'll post more photos - and perhaps a video or two.

Great layout. Love the radio station

It's very rare to see a radio station modeled. This is something I plan to include on my layout, since I worked in radio back in the early '70s. I also love all the detail of your mines, especially the haul trucks and other equipment. I retired from a company that sold and rebuilt parts for those things, so that's another doff spot for me, one that space won't allow me to indulge on my layout.

No, but I did work in Cincinnati for a while.

I started at WCOR AM&FM in Lebanon, TN, in 1970, then moved to WLAC-FM in Nashville for a couple of years, then WLAC-AM, their all news and talk station. At the same time I was working for WMOT-FM in Murfreesboro, Middle Tennessee State University's station. I gave it all up and changed careers in 1974.
