One thing that irritates me about the host/guest videos I've watched, is the constant interruptions and talking over the guest by the host. I would ignore it if it was only one host, but I've seen the same behavior by multiple "hosts".

Their banter is usually totally unnecessary, and aggravating to listen to. Let the guest give his presentation without the inane interruptions and you will have a much more coherent, concise, and pleasant video.

These are my opinions and you are free to share yours also.

Well when you think about it,

Well when you think about it, most of them are during operating sessions so I (not that this is by experience sadly) would expect there to be conversations in the background. I highly doubt  that you if you have operating sessions would have your guests stay completely silent. That just my two sense not that anyone has to agree.

Back Shop Clinic

I suspect this is in reference to the Back Shop Clinic episodes and mostly Lionel Strang's style.

Personally I think Lionel brings a "fun" into the interview that, while possibly annoying to some, it quite entertaining to others. I don't feel that this takes away from the interview, but rather makes it less sterile and fun to watch.

We haven't seen any episodes with Lionel lately, and while there are probably personal issues at play here, I do hope we get to see more of Lionel and his off the wall approach to engaging people again soon.

I can't say I recall other hosts on TMTV being interruptive. What did I miss?

At Portland ...

During the National Train Show at Portland, the most-requested person to meet was Lionel Strang. He's a very popular host because of his fun-poking hosting style, and we get the most emails from viewers wanting "more Lionel". My guess was the OP is referring to Lionel, because he does interrupt the hosts fairly frequently with some of his ornery quips. Miles Hale seems to be the best foil to Lionel, because he fires right back at Lionel with further smart remarks. While I can see some might find Lionel's style too cutesy and not business-like enough, we also have received comments that our hosts tend to be too predictable and folks would like to see more energy and surprises from our hosts. Bottom line, you can't please everybody. That said, we do believe it's important for the hosted sessions to be entertaining as well as informative. Like MRH, we feel each TMTV hobbyist/host brings a unique mix of talents with them and getting to know them a bit on screen adds interest and makes them feel less like robots. Sterile information presentation done by robots is certainly not very entertaining.

Original post

never referenced a person or segment and even said multiple people do it. So the "It must be Lionel" is hearsay. Instead of some constructive criticism it's now derailed with Lionel "high fives".

but Lionel...

...does interrupt everybody!

So I'll bring it back to my question:

I can't say I recall other hosts on TMTV being interruptive. What did I miss? < <

Are there some specific examples of other hosts being interruptive?
As I said, I have not noticed this myself.

In my post, I was just relating the other feedback we've received on the TMTV show hosts and that Lionel seemed to be the one with the "bad behavior" the OP mentioned. If that's not the case, then we need some help identifying the issue.

As Bill asks, some specific examples would be helpful since this is the first time we've ever received this comment. We need more detail to understand what the annoying behavior is so we can do something about it ...

I don't know what the guy's

I don't know what the guy's name is that I was watching today, but it was the video labeled 2015-09.3: TMTV Sep 2015 Edition - Act III  He is the guy on the right in the black shirt.

One of the other guys I was referring to, was on a video that I watched last month. He was with Miles Hale ( I think), dressed in a black shirt and was very obese, not at all humorous, and wasted about 40% of the video with his chatter.

These are for the most part very good videos, but would be so much better without all the distractions.

Another distraction

is the guy who has to be in every shot when a camera car is making a show of the layout. I saw one guy who actually ran to the next place the camera was going. He must have thought it was obvious because he started carrying a controller around and pretended to be pushing buttons. What did show was it was not even plugged in as the end of the cord was dangling from it. No, it was not an antenna, it had a phone plug on the end. If he only had a brain.

Loud talking is distracting  when watching a layout video. If a bunch of guys can't be quiet for ten minutes or so then do the shooting when the only person around is the operator of the train. Would be much more enjoyable.

TMTV does not do camera car shots

These are not examples of TMTV videos, since we don't use camera car shots and we use lapel mikes.

Camera cars have become something of a stereotype, and most modelers don't build layouts to be seen at their best from this camera perspective, so TMTV does not use them. Maybe this is typical on free YouTube videos, but you won't see this on TMTV.

As for loud talking on a layout video, again, we don't use much ambient room noise as our main sound track on TMTV. We use lapel mikes and in-studio voiceover to get the best possible sound track for a video. On-camera mikes pick up everything in the room, which is not how professional-quality video should be made.

Now this all said, the MRH Store (Model Trains Video, previously) does do ambient sound on the OPS Live videos, but we charge less for those and we tell you up front they are like live newsreel footage, where it's more important to catch the real-time action as it's happening than it is to have studio-perfect sound and video. TMTV members get this video for free as a bonus, but it's not a TMTV production.

Good Mix

I personally like the mix of banter on the videos. Lionel, Trevor and Clark all ask questions during the demonstrations that I would probably ask if I were there. We all have our own perspectives on what we are expecting or wanting out of the TMTV videos, but I enjoy seeing the hobby from someone else's experience. This is not PBS with its sterile video and non emotional commentary. This is our hobby, and, as such, it should be relaxing, entertaining, expressive, creative, and informative. All the greats in the hobby have willingly shared their knowledge of their techniques and how they went about doing what they do. As such, I have tried things I would NEVER have attempted if they had not shared their knowledge. So carry on Gentlemen and Ladies, keep smiling and making me smile, you make my model railroading hobby fun for me.

Haven't felt irritated myself

Haven't felt irritated myself by interaction on the videos as I enjoy the banter as it keeps things informal.

Well here's mine.

Everyone has different tastes.  If you have feedback to offer, please feel free to send us a private note.  But there is no reason to bring these kinds of insults to a public forum.

I think you are a mean-spirited - and possibly judgmental - person for taking the extra effort to point out physical attributes of a person in a negative manner.  Actually, it's just plain rude.  The fact that you can't even remember the names of the hosts, or do a quick search to find the names, says a lot about your relations with other humans.

Joseph, I know that I risk offending you be telling you this:   There are all kinds of people of different shapes, sizes, sexes and colors in this hobby who model different eras, locations and scales.  If it's those differences that you are using to define people then probably nothing we do is going to make you happy, regardless of whether you find them entertaining or not.  Feel free to cancel your subscription.  My hosts do a great job and are always trying to improve.  I would rather lose a subscriber than have one of them insulted.

Now let's talk about trains again.

Those are some great words I am glad this problem was fixed. Sadly I can't comment on video quality though from what I have heard they are very good.  (I would subscribe if I could though)

Public forum is awkward

Barry, I did ask Joseph for details and he gave me what I requested.

Unfortunately, this kind of criticism is very awkward to deal with out in the open in a public forum - but I did ask for it, so you can blame me.

It is best this kind of commentary be done using our feedback form on TMTV - see:
http://trainmasters.tv/contact#message

This will send us your feedback directly as a private message. I should have advised the OP right up front to do that.

We appreciate honest feedback but please use our private feedback link above - we do read it and if possible will act on it.

This thread is now locked. For any further discussion, please use this feedback link:
