Bill Brillinger

Like many others, I have a very large collection of prototype photos.

I've been considering posting them online, but I am wondering where is the best place to do that?

All suggestions welcome!

prototype photos?

My favorite site to look for photos is RR archives dot net. I haven't posted any there yet so I don't know how user friendly it is in that respect.....DaveB

@City of Salina

I was more thinking about contributing to an existing photo project like RR Archives.

Photos on line

I have used Flickr for the last 3 years. I find it has plenty of features and easy to use.  In three years my small collection of photos has has more than 1.5 million views with little promotion.

If you can, clean up your photos before posting and be selective if you are posting for public consumption. Expect to have your photos ripped off, image theft is wide spread on the web. I know some of mine have been used by commercial organizations that should know better. All you can do is water mark each photo with your name to minimize this misuse.

Something I am considering too...

Like Bill I was thinking about contributing to an existing photo project rather than creating my own. Any other opinions on using http://www.railcarphotos.com, www.railpictures.net, or www.rrpicturearchives.net? Any others to suggest?

Please don't create your own.

Seems like the majority of times that I am doing research and a link points me to a collection of photos on something like Flickr the photos are no longer there.

We don't last all that long.........hopefully our contributions like prototype photos can be made available longer.

Rick...

I agree. I'm not a professional Photographer, but I have many photos that would be useful to others; the same way I have found photos in collective sites useful myself.

I have the skills to create an online photo database but I kind of resent the fact the I have to go to so many sites to find a few photos of a specific piece of rolling stock, and then there is the inconsistent labeling. ugh.

Hence my desire to contribute to a collective effort... Ideally one where other members can improve upon the data that is listed with the photo.

I am in the process of

I am in the process of researching the 500-600+ railcar photos that I tool in the early 90s. I use 4 websites in my research-

rr-fallenflags ; Allot of older photos, and they are just basically organized by roadname and number.

rrpicturearchives; ALLOT of photos, and they have car ranges, etc.

railcarphotos; Decent collection of photos. The only downside I see is that I understand they want your photo to be perfect, or it gets rejected. They have allot of information on the car as well. Not sure how much has to be done by the contributor.

railgoat.railfan- Mostly SP and related stuff. Allot of information in regards to car ranges, classes, etc.

I am sure you remember a time when you had to go to the train yard yourself and hope for a certain car.
