I started a more extensive work four weeks ago.
My friend asked for building of eight PFE R-70-2 reefers from Sunshine Models, the so-called "Super Giant reefers".

First model is ready and I must say that I was not lucky to built it. Yes, the kit has a well detailed car body however I must spent a lot of work to reaching a well detailed model where I had to replace most of original detailing parts.

You can see more pictures as preview in a gallery of my website - http://us-modelsof1900.de/?p=10704

Chuch, Neil, thank you very

Chuch, Neil, thank you very much for your friendly comments!

Now a few pictures about working progress.

One of many additions which I had to do. Look the free end of frame bolster. A picture of prototype on construction sheet shows this.

I made a fast addition and so it looks better and many more reasonable, I think. In realization I added some rivet heads yet and so I received a quite well looking frame. However this was only one of a lot of lacks of this kit.

First details on underbody and frame - installation of brake components and a complete piping, including a "pipe" to retainer valve. (I hate parts which are installed and where no connection exists to a working system or where a pipe ends "in the air".)

Brake rigging is added.
A very interesting thing is a double brake cylinder. The standard cylinder works like usual and the smaller one will be actuated only at a loaded car and both pistons are working on same brake main lever, so as you can see.

Two pictures of brake yet photographed about the diagonal.
Incidentally, the construction plan mentioned that I had to install two pipes to brake cylinders however Sunshine Models writes not that I should mount a connection pipe from train line to triple valve and the dust absorber at triple valve was not part of the kit.

Last addition - hand brake

Some times ago I have written about missing of real fine chains and there was an answer from Bernd to check jewelers. How I said before, they all do not offer better chains as that what I own. Until I found a web shop with one offer, a finer chain as mine!
Here I have pictured the problem - and the solution.

I must find a solution for installing an AJAX type hand brake using a well fitting chain and draw bar because my friend like to receive really well detailed models.
On right side is seen what were included into kit, a chain with a short fat rod. What should I do with this? (Also parts from Tichy brake sprues are not better!). You can not lengthen such a plastic rod and how should this be a solid and stable part? Working with my regularly used chain in center? No, it is a bit to strong with 44 links.

However there was an only web offer, a simple anchor chain with 50 links per inch and a wire diameter of 0,2 mm or 0.008". At last the right chain for my modeling jobs! And so hand brake and brake gear are looking with the new and fine chain and a 0.008 rod, left!
And this is the result.

Ready! Can I do more yet?
Ok, painting and lettering will be done by a friend however I think that I should build all eight models before. And so the end will not come in this year.

Rob, ...

... many thanks for your honoring comment.

Today I received a reply from my friend - he is delighted with this model and of course he would like to have some improvements. That was to await because I know his expectations. However all these things are such where I understand his wishes and so this first and all other models will be modified a bit. I will write again about it.

Now five models are ready!

Exactly one year ago I presented the first of PFE R-70-2 reefer models here in my blog.

How I have written, my friend was lucky about this first model, however not absolutely satisfied! And today I can understand his objection.
He was not lucky with this footboard for the brakeman, a small plastic part that was delivered with the kit of Sunshine models and two small other things which must be changed. Please compare these two pictures - before ...

... and after!

I think that he was right with his wish! I replaced the raw plastic parts by steps made from a hard cardboard which were drawn and laser cut by a professional model builder. This is the complete board or that what is leftover in moment.

Today I would like to show you the next models of this series, all built with the modifications as shown and written before.

In next year I will build the last three models of these PFE "super-giant" reefers and then everything should be done for my friend - maybe until a new question for building some models to him.

You can find a complete gallery of this project on my website with captions in English.
