Athearn BB sideframes
Mon, 2010-02-22 10:27 — ratled
I started working on a few Athearn BB dummies to expand the loco roster. When removing the sideframes as I go through these, it seems like I break at least one of the main "pins" off as I gently pry off a set. I don't feel as if they are more stuck as they come off or the pin is breaking, it feels just the same as those that don't break. It's not until I turn it it over do I see that they broke.
Having said all that, I was wondering are they fixable or is it just better to get the replacements? Also, I was wondering if anyone tried adding something to the hole to make it easier next time for removal? I was thinking graphite, talc, ATF, etc.
Thanks
Steve

I think it is better to buy new one from Athearn.
You migt be able to add a pin to the side frame for a repair, but it would probably be a lot of trouble for an inexpensive part. You don't want them to be looser or lubricateed in any way. One of the problems the Ihave had with older Athearns is the need to use something to make the side frames a bit tighter so that they don't fall off. It may be that Athearn has fixed the problem of loose side frames falling off, but doing anything to make them looser would probaly undo Athearn's fix to the problem.
