Hey guy’s

I was watching a YouTube video recently from a guy who paints “wargaming” figures and he painted one of the bases with a paint that when dried up looked like cracked mud! I instantly thought about using that on the model railroad so I went out got some of that paint and started experimenting.

I think the results speak for them self!

If you’re interested I used Citadel Technical paint “Agrellan Earth”, I’m not 100% sure but I think most art stores sell a type of medium that you can use and color yourself to get the same effect but so far I’ve only tried the Citadel paint.

I have also made an in depth tutorial about making the scene pictured above, it includes absolutely everything I did and detailed descriptions from a piece of foam to a completed scene.

I called it Volume 2, but really I’m just having fun with naming my videos. Maybe one day I will have some professional videos someone will want! Video is my way of expressing what I’m doing in terms of modelling, some people are really good bloggers but I find I enjoy videography a little more and I find it easier to deliver the videos in a tutorial style.

I’m actually pretty terrible just sitting in front of a camera with no script! A lot of um’s and ah’s. Anyway rambling on now!

Hope you enjoy the picture and video if you choose to watch.

Cheers
Luke Towan.

Thanks for sharing. A superb

Thanks for sharing. A superb instructional video. I will definitely check out your other videos.

You have inspired me to make another diorama.

I really like the mud effect and will use it on my dirt road as seen here in the making:

This is the last diorama I made. You have also inspired me to want to take it outdoors; preferably to the edge of the coast to photograph.

16 enjoyable minutes . . .

. . . on how to build superb scenery! Well done, Luke.

I've often been tempted to use Modge Podge matte in lieu of acrylic matte medium. I've never been quite certain, though, if it's apples and apples. A lot less expensive, for certain. But can anyone enlighten me?

Also, Luke, great tips on recycling a spray can lid for a shaker, the cracked mud (of course!), and using pastels to highlight the tire tracks.

Just ordered my Citadel Technical "Agrellan Earth." Took a pass on another CT color, "Blood for the Blood God." I don't model the UP.

I can't thank you all enough!

Wow, thanks everyone!

My inspiration is definitely all the fantastic work I see here on these forums, modeling is just getting better and better! People are developing new techniques using materials we've had all along and managing to get amazing and very realistic results. We drive each other to do better.

It's all about taking the materials and applying them in ways that get results, and by results I mean good and bad results. We can learn more from the bad results than we ever can from the good ones! I'm constantly trying new techniques that come crashing down in a massive heap, and if I'm lucky I'll stumble upon something I never intended to do!

But that is what's great about this hobby, you can do and try just about anything! I hope some of you can take the techniques I've used and add you own twist on it to get a better result.

Thanks again for all the kind words and inspiration.

Cheers
Luke.

Excellent tutorial

Luke, lots of great tips there and you show that anyone can do scenery as it is not that difficult, just take it step by step.

Will have to sit down and look at all of you other videos - I've watched the odd one here and there but probably have missed quite a few. Thanks for taking the time to make them.

Superb!

Thanks for sharing!  Crisp, clean concise and stellar results!  I will definitely be watching this one again and trying this out on a small diorama to get the hang of it.

Details added

Just a quick update to the description for the YouTube video,

I've added a detailed list for all the products and materials I used in the construction of the diorama.
It's all written down in the description below the video when viewed on YouTube, I've also added the same list one my website if you view the video there.

Thanks again for all the positive comments, it's really given me a boost and has motivated me to do more videos like it.

Cheers
Luke.

You seem like a natural. . .

. . . teacher to me, Luke. With you and Joey Ricard at Trackside Scenery showing the way, a lot of folks here will gain new skills, techniques and build some great scenery.

Luke, That is a well

Luke,

That is a well constructed video with excellent modeling techniques.

I've learnt a lot off different things from a very clever modeler.

Cheers
