One of my side interests is railway slides.  I have amassed quite a few over the years, and an offshoot of this is trying to find locations that were shot in the past and see how they look now.  An ongoing "project" is finding locations in the Vancouver area related to the historic BC Electric streetcar and interurban services that were shut down in 1958.

I was at a street corner a few weeks ago and it suddenly dawned on me that I had a slide from the same location.  People probably wondered what this guy was doing wandering around the various corners taking pictures with his phone, but I had a plan.

I found the slide in question and after a few minutes of Photoshopping got exactly the result I was looking for.

Merged photos, second one has the streetcar shot opaque to get a better idea how much has changed.  Quite a change in the 66 years between photos don't you think?

I love "then & now" pictures.

It might be interesting to add a little transparency to the top layer -- it would better show the changes (e.g. the modern background buildings that are hidden by the overlay), while giving a sort of "ghost" feeling to the older scene.

I've actually found slides in my Dad's archives that match pictures I've taken 40 years later, i.e. very close to the same spot and angle (E.g. of railroad relevance: the Mt. Washington cogway, from the upper platform, with a train in roughly the same location. Weird.)

View lost.

interesting to see how much of the skyline has been lost.

Vancouver

Wow! The memories of Vancouver at the end of the war. The big red interurbans, just like the ones the were sent from SF/Oakland, CA down to the Pacific Electric in L.A.

Me Mum and I rode them, I think over to New West, and maybe Burnaby? We also crossed the Second Narrows Bridge to go visit an Aunt and Uncle in North Van. Long gone now and me in my late 70's. Simpler times, even with the war, eh? John Colley, Sonoma, CA

Vancouver Island Live Steam

I am too young to have seen the street cars but do remember riding the live steam train in the park probably in the late 60's. Wonder what scale it was and when it was removed?

btw I used to ski Mount Baker and developed quite the Canadian accent after a while even though raised a yank. People asked if I came down from Burnaby - lol. Still have a tin ear that helps a bit living in Hawaii.

There is still a tourist

There is still a tourist train in Stanley Park in Vancouver, but they are powered by gas motors now so doesn't have the same appeal.  The Burnaby Central line ( http://burnabyrailway.org/) is the place to go for live steam.  Smaller scale and a fun way to spend an afternoon.  Live steam is tempting but I have a difficult enough time trying to build my HO empire to take on something else.
