Dibs on the Nelson yard job.

Switchers seem like the best use for sound, given all the back and forth they do.  Pretty impressive for something that small.  Sign me up for the Nelson yard job.  Given the extra space in the C Liners you could probably put a significantly larger speaker in them.  Any plans for that?

larger speaker?

...well I don't need a larger speaker for volume that's for sure.  I have all the locos' volume dialed down to 10-15% of max output and I am still worried the overall noise level will be annoying.  We shall see at next week's op session.

Super impressive!

That's outstanding Mark!  The sound is surprisingly good.  Amazing that they could find space for everything in that tiny little shell.  I'm equally impressed, though, by the great performance.  Seemed to be every bit as smooth as HO.

Every time I watch one of your videos, I'm encouraged that N scale would be a viable alternative for my future layout should we ever downsize.

It's all about the bass

Wouldn't a larger speaker give better bass response?  I have always found the low end frequencies lacking in most sound units, although some of the recent stuff I have heard sounds pretty good.  Of course we won't get the "vibrate your teeth" response you get from a prototype going past but the better low end reproduction the better.

Performance

Mark- are you having any strange electrical problems at very low speeds?  I've seen a few, locally, that seem to have an identical problem. They stall when run at low speed, then upon restart the forward and reverse lights alternate quickly for a second before they resume motion.  Track's clean, etc. other locos all run fine on the same track.

electrical problems?

Not what you describe GS but I have only had them for a day.  The pair does seem to slow down occasionally, especially when crossing turnouts without any adjustment to the speed setting on the throttle nor a change in headlight brightness that might indicate conductivity issues.  Strange.

N scale has come a long way...............

..........since I first started seeing it years ago.  I have been fooled many times to thinking I was looking at HO when it was N.  Great looking/running and now with sound.  Also, I have seen N tested to run at 1 smp when the best the HO test in the same issue was 4 smp.  That is probably the best news for the N scalers!

Good show, Mark...............

Ultra-slow motio'N'...

With some TLC, it's possible to get N scale running at nearly undetectable speeds.

When I was first installing DCC decoders in my Lifelike SW9/1200s, I had one of the kit-built Locobuffers sitting on top of my desktop computer. I'd put a piece of the old Atlas code 80 flex track on top of the box with the Locobuffer for programming. I had the shell off, and was playing with the speed curves and trim, trying to see how slow I could get it to run.

The shell was off to verify it was actually running. I'd put a mark on one of the poles of the motor armature. It was twitching... and slowly... ever so slowly... advancing.

15 minutes later, it had advanced the width of ONE tie on the Atlas track. Not tie-plus-space-to-the-next-tie... JUST the width of the tie.

That works out to a scale speed of around 1 yard per hour. That's slower than even the Space Shuttle Transport Crawler. I'm not sure even a 1:1 locomotive can match that.

thumbs up

Having had the opportunity to operate these locomotives last night at Mark's I have to say I was very impressed with them. The sound was surprisingly good given the small size of the speakers, and they performed better in the yard than the SW1200 used previously. They pulled more cars and had fewer hiccups on the switches. It just confirms my preference for Alcos... Marc Simpson
