Technology takes another leap forward as Twitter enters the realm of "Live Broadcasting" with the iPhone app Periscope. I used it today to record a train passing through Haslett. I didn't have much time to get ready for the shot. I set up my GoPro camera and saw the headlight as soon as I got on the bridge. Started recording on the GoPro then started Periscope and the live broadcast. It was an interesting experiment. I was able to save the recording to my camera roll on the iPhone but the broadcast didn't save to Twitter. Periscope allows you to save a broadcast for 24hrs but in my haste I must have missed the option. The saved video leaves a lot to be desired as far as resolution  goes, the file I uploaded to Youtube is only 480p.

I have watched some live broadcast on my phone and the quality was good for that. What makes it interesting is that anyone can now become a citizen journalist. I intend to broadcast live from The Lincoln Funeral that will be taking place in Springfiend,Illinois. I will try broadcasting things that I find interesting on May 2-3 starting with my walk through of The Lincoln Funeral car.If you want to be in the loop follow me at https://twitter.com/robteed48808

Other uses

I have often wondered if it would be good for a quick clinic, such as painting or weathering. One evening I watched and chatted with a guy who was painting figures for a board game. It was very similar to war gaming and the figures we use for trains. It was nice to get the interaction and ask questions and even offer tips.

I figured the next time I weather up a engine or car, I just might turn it in and see if I get an audience.

How was it to record and transfer to YouTube?

record and transfer to YouTube

Hi Thomas,

After I was done broadcasting there was an option to "Save to camera roll" which I did. The video then showed up in my "Photos". Go figure, You would think it would be in "Movies". Once its in your Photos you can share it to Youtube.

About the Lincoln Funeral

About the Lincoln Funeral train that may be there I am not sure if you saw this article ( http://www.chicagotribune.com... )(it is from a little while ago) but they say it may not be done. ) An interesting story related to that though my Uncle has a friend who owns this local restaurant ( http://www.2toots.com/) (if you are ever there and the owner is to tell them Tim Currans Nephew Keegan sent you) and knows the person building this.

About the Lincoln Funeral train

Yes, I have seen the reports. As it is the Funeral Car will be there but Not the Steam Locomotive. There will still be plenty of things to do. I will have a personal tour of the Lincoln Funeral car ( May 2)  and then I will be covering the Lincoln Funeral as it proceeds down the road through town to Oak Ridge ( May 3 ) Cemetery. http://www.thosetrainpeople.com/

If you would like to watch Railyard Productions  live broadcast you should "Follow" me on Twitter I think. I don't use Twitter much but I think followers will get a message when I start my broadcast. http://twitter.com/robteed48808

6:00PM there is a dinner event, sometime after dinner we will get a walkthrough of the Lincoln Funeral car. I will be broadcasting the walkthrough unless I'm told I can't.

9:00AM Sunday morning The Funeral begins. I will broadcast at different times throughout the day.

In addition to this I will be filming with several different HD cameras and this videos will be posted on Railyard Productions Youtube channel and some on the Facebook Page.

Glad to see this work. One

Glad to see this work.

One suggestion - try horizontal for photos and videos. The result is usually more pleasing.

One suggestion

Yes, Well at present horizontal doesnt seem to work well with the iphone. When recorded in horizontal the resultant video shows up on screen and the iphone auto rotates said video back to the vertical iphone view. This creates a small horizontal video with the iphone in vertical postion. I looked in settings and can't find a fix for this.

No need to change a setting, just hold your phone horizontally for a bit and the video will flip back.

Horizontal Video in Periscope APP

At the moment Periscope limits you to a portrait view -- even for videos shot horizontally. My guess is that Periscope sets the video "Flag" to portrait even if shot in Horizontal mode. So when watching the video on the iPhone if someone shot said video in Horizontal and you watch it in Horizontal on your phone the phone Flips it to Portrait. That was my experience with it. I will mess with it some more.
