I model a lot of cars that are within 5 or 6 years of the new/repaint date. I was wondering how long does it take  before the paint starts to fade?

Well, that depends

on what part of the country you model.  many cars int he dessert southwest fad in a matter of months - others in the NE often start rusting before they fade.  If you have prototype cars in your fleet, look them up by reporting mark in some thing like Railroad Pictures Archives and see how them change.  I'd say most cars are somewhat faded in 5 years.  I addition, darker colors will generally be easier to see faded.
