I know there's some railroad modelers here that might be interested..

here one of my designs.. a uProcessor driven,  animated  color billboard

here you can see a prototype demo of the 2.2 inch TFT color unit...

the actual display pixel dimensions of the TFT are ~ 1 7/8 " x   1 7/16"  (4.8 mm x 3.6 mm).
and it shows some of the capabilities created with customizeable open source (== free ) PC software..
this display is VGA quality 320x240 pixels and real sharp -
the pictures shown, are in ~ 320x240 pixel size .bmp format,
which I created on my PC, and are stored on an SD card (like they use in digital cameras),
which is embedded in the hardware. .

the design also incorporates an "update" connection to change the software or update the uProcessor software to make changes/additions in display pictures and animation timing etc..

the camera I used to make the demo video produces a video of less quality (grainy) than the picture display in reality.

I created and have sent out to get a few (1.74" x 3.15") PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards) fabricated to implement this hardware.

you can create your own pictures in ~320x240 pixel .bmp format and store them on the SD card - then customize the software to create the rolling billboard display.

you could install this hardware in your own building or billboard structure.

and here another one..

and FYI -

here an earlier go at a "cheap" LCD display - this time a non-color display using a Nokia 5110 phone display.. (6 lines x 14 characters)

it displays information about trains leaving for different destinations.. again completely customizable..
