The MRH Facebook Page now has more than 25,000 people liking it - that's pretty spectacular:

The MRH Facebook page, along with links to posts here on this website, also shares product announcements from various manufacturers on Facebook

Really cool

I would think that the demographic for Facebook users is heavily youthful. So this is good for the growth of the hobby on the youth side.

Wow! This magazine and forum are fabulous. My finding this web site was like finding a pot of gold, rainbow and all.

Congratulations to the MRH mag staff.

@nydepot

The term "youth" has been, within another discussion on this forum, redefined as 40 years old or less. The "youth" you may be referring to is that group I originally expressed as adolescent or a bit short of or a bit greater than adolescent.

I question the accuracy of that 5% nevertheless - much of Facebook appeals to the younger generations.

Yes and no

Yes my youth is 17 and under. But the fastest declining segment of Facebook is teens. You can read many an article on it.

No need to question the accuracy. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. all have very easy to find demographics and numbers.

...

Well, yes, because the teens don't want to be on the same site as their parents.

The Facebook natives are around 32-37 years of age, whereas Facebook was only initially offered to College students in 2004.  The first users were all college kids, and the expansions were done first so these kids could keep their friends from high school once they went to college, and then so they could keep their account after they graduated - and in that order.

..

Well also throwing in that majority of kids lie about age just to get on a Facebook account could also have an impact on those numbers.

but...

25,000 is a significant number in this hobby segment!

only 6,000 behind MR's following on facebook and a mere 16,000 ahead of RMC.

Athearn: 21,000
Atlas: 31,000
ExactRail: 24,000

Well done!

But what does it all mean?

Well, 25,000 likes sounds great, but what does it mean? The logical thinker in me says that Facebook growth needs to translate to new MRH subscribers, those subscribers buying more products from the MRH store, and more industry advertisers coming aboard. How many just give it a "like" out of habit and move on? How many click through to the MRH site, sign up and maybe go to the store and actually spend some money?

Maybe Joe can comment to that effect. Is MRH's increasing popularity trend on Facebook translating to new subscribers, and more importantly, increased traffic at the MRH Store? What about advertisers? Can you use the Facebook growth in and of itself to attract new advertisers?

What does it mean?

Well from my point of view, as an advertiser, it means, what do I have to do to get new product mentions on the MRH facebook page

After something has been the "in thing"....

....for teens and once the media and their parents get wind of it and start using it, then the teens move on to  other things. Been that way forever. My teen daughter rarely uses facebook or twitter now having moved on...... I still keep my eye on her and what's she's using though.....she just doesn't know it!

Facebook and MRH

Since we started focusing on giving proper attention to our Facebook page, our new subscriber numbers have set new records of growth ... And our number one source of new visitors is Facebook. So yes, it makes a huge positive difference. By the way, on Facebook, when I ask for them to tell me how many of their members are in English-speaking countries and say "I like trains" in their profile, they tell me it's about 600,000 ... So that's a pretty decent number! To me it just makes sense ... If you want to "sell" a digital publication over the web, you need to be prominent on the most well traveled websites on the planet. The big three are: Google, Facebook, and Youtube. MR is on Facebook and Youtube. RMC is on Facebook (albeit, not huge) and they have no presence on YouTube at all (big miss). Of course, we're on Facebook and YouTube ... And it has made a huge positive impact on our growth.

Worth the effort.

Somebody had to ask it. So if Facebook=Subscribers=sales, then that means your efforts to beaf-up the Facebook presence are clearly paying dividends.

And with your nicely redesigned MRH Store, I would imagine a good number of those new subscribers will visit the store and purchase some of the cool products. More good!
