AGWRAILWAY

mage(24).jpg You know if we modeled an abandoned railroad we could save a lot of money not buying locos and cars.  Look at all the time saved on wiring too.

The 2014-2015 was tough on the Springfield Western in Illinois.  Track gangs are being mobilized to renew the track for the summer tourist season. This is on the outdoor layout at Castle Trains in Springfield, Illinois. A must stop for hobbyists if you make it to the capital.

Abandoned but still running?

Railroads have been abandoned leaving locomotives and equipment to rust in the weeds and the structures to the birds, bees, bugs, and elements!  Many fellow modelers would probably give a guy some left over track, busted boxcars, etc. or you can possibly pick up such stuff at train shows in junk boxes for a buck or less!  A man sure can save a lot of hard earned cash with no power source required much less sound and DCC, unless you do want some sounds of singing birds in the trees?  Don't forget Tweety's do-do on the roof of the old depot either....A MUST!....LOL

I have seen photos of abandoned right-of-ways in New Hampshire with rails paved over with a sign under the crossbucks at road crossings proclaiming ABANDONED so motorists didn't have to Stop, Look & Listen!  I believe the track was railbanked?

Save on locos....

Yep, you might save some money on locos and rolling stock, but do you know just what a pain in the butt it's going to be modeling all those tree trunks and roots growing out the ties and over the rails accurately.........

Hrm...

...I could be quite good at making one of those...            I think I might not even need to learn any new bad habits- I mean, new building techniques (like procrastination...      And...      Nah, I'll think of more later...)

Expense

@Leverettrailfan:

It turns out that the R-O-W for this type of project could be quite costly these days. Perhaps a parent or grandparent would be open to the idea of some animation or ornamentation in the garden would be more interesting than gnomes or flamingos.

If my wife can have horses in Hawaii then I should be able to have a collection of live steam and an abandoned railway not to run them on (sigh).

I'm afraid

I'm not really convinced. The detail is well overscale, there's no rotten, tag-encrusted buildings scented with eau-de-drunk-urine, no big piles of rust, tunnels, and the track looks too new and the wrong colour.

Or maybe I'm just overthinking a comedy title which isn't meant to be a serious exploration into miniature urbex? There was a cartoon in one of the British magazines where a modeler introduces another to another railway modeler he knows, with the words "I have to warn you he's a bit of an oddball- he likes to model branch lines long after they've closed!" as we see the character in question bent over a branch line station, with broken or boarded-up windows, garbage all over the platform, and an upended shopping trolley on the overgrown track.

You could avoid having to animate anything by only doing little static scenes, which seems to have much more of a point to it than deliberately making a layout that doesn't work. You could even do abandoned underground roads that way. Unless of course you occasionally ran what the British call a "parly" (or "ghost Train)? Incomplete structures also will need much work to make them into ruins.

Giant leaves

Leverettrailfan, those leaves are surely from a mighty oak!

I guess,

Just not any oak on my property! If I made MY abandoned railway, it would be more around the numerous pine trees out back of my house, since it wouldn't be allowed anywhere else! :D then again, maybe there are some oaks out there...     I was to busy trying to bushwhack through prickers and tangled grass and fallen limbs to notice!
