Operations on the Estrella & Sonora Grande are winding down. Here, a 'cleanup train' sent up the high line is coming back from Estrella with some empty cars left there. Below, #4 awaits clearance at San Lorenzo to head up the line with a work train to begin pulling up the rail.

mage0970.jpg
Ernesto paused beside the 'Sidewinder' while he reflected on all the years and miles they have seen together. This was one of her last runs on the Estrella & Sonora Grande.

mage0972.jpg
The scrap train was ready to head out, but a newspaper  photographer insisted on a photo of the crew to commemorate this moment in time. This photo was published in the Sonora Grande Herald the following day.

Only after the issue hit the streets did the photographer realize he should have taken a second picture! There's always some character causing trouble, and Ernesto has always been known for his sense of humor.

Until later, amigos!

This era is not ending, it is merely shifting laterally

I've always been saddened by pictures of venerable little steam lokies, literally, pulling up the rails behind them. In the real world, you know that there is nothing after that. Luckily in Verne's world, the narrow gauge magic will spring forth anew!

Hurray!!

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (photographed and story for PPG Industries) should be a recipient for this small lesson on the area's history. Would be a fitting end to a great "run". . . . .

Will follow the lateral move with continuing interset as I've followed the railroad itself. A great job and wonderful pictures and story.

Farewell to an On30 Classic

Verne, you created a classic and memorable On30 layout with the E&SG, and I, like so many others will be sad to see it go. Your attention to story, detail and signature scenes could serve as an abject lesson on how to create a memorable railroad with boxcar loads of personality. I can't be too sad, however, since I've had a glimpse into what's coming next. I'm sure your talents will continue to amaze and inspire us for many years to come. Full steam ahead, amigo!

Do I see a Hitchcock-type cameo?

Verne,

You call hin Ernesto, but his face and hat look pretty much like your photo.

Very nice touch. Can you repeat it in HO?

Not gone...

Your wonderful work will live on in the layouts across the country where your creations will live next. I hate to see such a great layout 'disappear', but look forward to seeing it live again in other layouts. (especially mine!  )

Thank you

Thank you all for your kind comments, I am filled with gratitude for the 8 years of fun I have had with the E&SG, and the privilege of sharing it - and learning so much from friends in the hobby. That has been the greatest pleasure of all.

As for what is ahead, life has thrown me several curves already in 2015. The most recent, my layoff from work, will force me to change my plans. I decided to switch scales in late October, and then life happened! All I know for certain is that the next project will be narrow gauge trains and it will be fun...the hobby is a great stress reliever, and I need some of that right now! Whatever it is, I will continue to share my work here and on my website.

As for a Hitchcock-style cameo, any similarity between me and figures on my model railroad are purely coincidental. < grin>

Good Luck!

You need some it seems. Sorry about the job, that's always a hassle...

Keep us posted.

Thank you for the memories!

As an aspiring On30 modeler, I've followed your progress here on MRH with rapt attention! As a native of Arizona it was wonderful to see such a great little railroad in a scenic setting. Good luck on the new layout!

Verne has been ill...

I just read that Verne has been ill, in and out of the hospital in the last few days. Hopefully all will be well again and we can watch his new layout develop.

Get well soon Verne. Prayer sent.

Thank you

Thank you all very much!

I have had a great few days home, got some rest, and was pretty active today per my doctor's advice. I am preparing my San Lorenzo diorama for transfer up to Dave Meek's Thunder Mesa tomorrow, and tonight I am filled with fond memories of the E&SG, and the fun it has been. It has been a fantastic ride with this little layout!

No worries, though, no time to look back, I am looking forward to many good things ahead. I have plans for a new railroad with a new concept and the hobby will play a key part in reducing stress as I recover. Call it On30 Therapy if you wish. I call it fun! I have renewed my website for the coming year, and have a lot of projects ahead that are raring to go.

I can't wait to get started!

Good news, Verne!

Although I'm sorry that the Maverick Canyon Branch might not see fruition. Looking forward to your new ventures in On30, though!

Well, this should be interesting...

Knowing you Verne, the rabbit you're gonna pull out of your hat ought to be interesting. One layout down and the future layout in question, it will be fun to see what you do.
