I had been working on a house for my Free-mo module and it just was not keeping me motivated to keep working on it. I had recently been enticed by an sale at Monster Model Works and as I look through their items I came across Triple J Repair. I really had no reason to buy the kit, but between what I had heard on a few podcasts and seen on the net I decided to give one of the kits a try. After getting the kit home I took a peak at it and put it with my pile of other stuff I had to build.

Fast forward to my house project and frustration. I decided that I needed to be doing more modeling so I grabbed the Triple J and opened it up. I decided I would put the walls together and see what happened. The wall assembly went together pretty quickly, there are a few things I would have done differently on the next one, but it still looks fine. I had some extra pieces from the cutouts of the doors and windows and thought I would make some modifications to the kit. I do not like to have my buildings look like everyone else's so I decided to make it into a shop of some sort of shop.

On my initial build I used the large door opening as an interior wall to separate into two parts.. My initial thought was to make it a small shop maybe working on small engines. I really had no real plan for hte building so I went ahead and painted the building.

A plan, by accident.

After I had the walls assembled and painted I started looking around Bend Oregon for a suitable business to put in this small building. I originally thought about a small engine of motorcycle shop, but could not find anything that interested me. I was then doing some research using the Bend Bulletin Newspaer archives and came across Had's McCulloch Shop, specializing in sales, service and rental of McCulloch Chainsaws. I thought that would be a neat small business to set on one of my Free-mo modules. It would tell a little bit about the area, showing the importance of logging, had a neat sign, and would be relatively easy to fit into the small Triple J building.

I spent the evening arranging the interior to find out what the best use of space would be. I figured the small area to one side would be the office and repair area, the garage area would be the display and shopping area. I figured that a shop like this would fit this small space as they probably did not have massive inventory's and all the items would be on the smaller side.

With the interior roughed in I decided to start figuring out the new front wall.

Needs a screen door

It's looking great, Greg!  A Nehi vending machine would be a nice touch.,,

How About

Placing outside one of those carvings they do with the chainsaw. Maybe put a baywindow into the front opening next to the door. It would be different but provide a space to place a couple of chainsaws for display.

Looking Good !

Thanks guys.

Ken: Some sort of sodas machine would be a gold idea. I will have to dig in my box of stuff and see what I have.

Patrick:  Good idea about the chainsaw art. I was thinking of doing a chainsaw display where they are stuck through a tree that has been debarked and stained. I remember going to the logging conference in Eugene and seeing saws displayed this way.

Some more progress

I was able to get the new front door in place and the window roughed in. I also made a small addition for a bathroom. I figured it was the right thing to do for the hard working guys at the shop.

Chain Saw Art

Somewhere I have a picture of a Chain Saw carved with a chain saw. It was about 4 times actual size and was used at a store in Tasmania similar to what you are building. I will see if I can find it.

Chainsaws

I used the evergreen hill design chainsaws as a starting point for the majority. The Evergreen saws are modeled after a large two man chainsaw model. I cut some in half or at least cut down the bars to different lengths. Some of the other saws are pieces of scrap SS LTD motor blocks I modified. The small saw on the counter was cut out of the hands of a Preiser Logging Figure.

3d printed chain saws.

I have some chainsaws I designed on order from shapeways.com, we will see in about a week how they turn out.

I did a small engine repair shop previously, and it had a few chain saws in it.

Thanks Jimmy and Kent

Jimmy,

I have been wanting to build a Monster Model Works for awhile and I am happy that I bit the bullet and grabbed this kit. I do plan on picking up some of your other products as they are truly amazing and innovative.

Kent,

Keep me up to date on how they look, I will most likely need a bunch more chainsaws and I am always looking for something different.

As an update I was able to make a sign out for Had's I purchased what was supposed to be HO sclale Chainsaws and ended up with O scale so, lemonade out of lemons...
