After trying to find good dimensions of the Marion 4160, I decided that if I was going to 3D print parts I needed a working model to help get a handle on how it all goes together. Given the change in exchange rate and costs of 3D printing, I figure it is to my advantage to scratch build the Marion 4160 first. Then if/when I get it into 3D drawings and print the parts, I can have a couple of them.

So here is where I am at. Much of what is done is scaled off of my photos. I do have a few real measurements on parts of the boom and crawler frame. I don't know what the crowd motor looks like that would be on the boom and I have not found photos which would help get the body width. In some poor quality photos it looks like the body is as wide as the crawler frame is long. This and the other side will be easy to mode. The other side is the same with the exception of the cab shape which is on this side.

I scale many items as ratios where I am otherwise unsure. I have found that if it looks right, it is probably closer to the truth than not.

When I get a few more parts done I will provide an update again.

Until next time.

Looks great!

That looks like an excellent start to a beautiful model, Tim.

One thought/suggestion, since you mentioned 3D printing.  I have often found it helpful to make a 3D drawing of an object I want to model, even if I am going to build it out of traditional materials.  It's quite helpful to see how things fit together, and programs like Sketchup have tools which make it a lot easier to get dimensions out of photographs.  I find it to be more accurate than working straight off the photos as you show above, and I have caught some rather significant errors that way in the past.

Photos to AutoCAD

I have several of the photos in AutoCAD scaled based on the big Center gear. From that I get many of the measurements. Yes I do measure direct from the photos as well.
