Here is a link to the Pennsy layout operating session I noted in the pictures of me operating the yard engine on Steve Mallory's Buffalo Line. Rather dramatic, but that's what the photographer had in mind.

Pushing a caboose?

Was it common for helper units to push against the caboose on the Pennsy?  I understand that on some RR's the practice was banned due to light weight construction of the caboose.

Lead units: "What was that bump?"  Radio response from the rear: "Just shortened your consist by one car length."

Drop the Music

Nice video but the music is way too distracting and does not seem to fit.

Why in the video does the train appear to be "jerky?"  Is it the camera?

@ Morris, some of the steel cabooses were designed to be pushed.

Pushing on caboose

On the PRR pushes could push against Cabin Cars (Caboose) if they had a steel underframe. Which all of the later cars had. Not sure about other roads.

It's called "change the volume" or mute

Besides videos with pushers typically use dramatic music and that score from Harry Potter is a very dramatic scene.

Back to the video - very nice work Dave. I model the former PRR a bit further north. You've captured it well.

If one my students had turned in that score...

I would have given him a B. Good composition, well spotted, but too overblown for the action. It has nowhere to go for scenes that actually have drama.

The jerky motion is a YouTube framerate thing. Nothing to do with the locomotives or the camera.
