Capturing That Expensive Scenery Turf/Grass

I have discovered on my first table that 1.) scenery turf and grass is expensive, 2.) it looks the best when applied quite liberally, and 3.) this liberal application is difficult to recapture for reuse.

While at the local thrift store, I spotted a handheld dustvac for a buck and thought I just might be able to make this work...

Took it home, gutted the motor out of it, cut off the end of the handle creating an airflow passage, fit the hole in the handle with a piece of hose that fits my shopvac, taped up most of the holes (not all, the vac has too much suction) and IT WORKS !!

I LOVE cheap.. ;)

Seeing that the Dustvac was

Seeing that the Dustvac was only a buck, you could not go wrong. But why not just use your shop vac, just make sure it is empty before you start. I have done this for years with success. I find that recycled stuff tends to be a bit more coarse and is re-used as appropriate. Steve

Shopvac

I don't even worry about the vacuum being empty.  I take old nylons and tape a piece over the end of one of the vacuum attachments, letting a bit go inside to form a "cup".  Turn the vacuum on and it sucks all the excess scenic materials into the stocking cup.  Hold the attachment over a container and shut off the vacuum to dump the contents of the nylon cup.  It works for me!

Just shove a stocking over

Just shove a stocking over the end that goes into the canister and you have a great collecting pouch, Great ideas. Wish I thought of them before I finished most of my scenery!

Blue Sometimes I feel we grew

Blue Sometimes I feel we grew together in different parts of the world because I do the same thing with old nylon stockings and have for years. I just do it slightly different in that I bought a second 1-1/2 gallon shop Vac and put pantyhose over the filter and this is my scenery vac. The nylon is definitely the trick to save a lot of materials. I like the panty hose that comes in an egg case one size fits all.
