Rio Grande Dan

I love MRH forums for the simple reason that people trying to Advertise here for free by starting a blog as a cover for their products last about 20 minutes and admin gets a dozen e-mails reporting them and then they are gone forever. I like that every member here looks out for the forums and as soon as some dork tries to place a hidden add on the forums they are reported and bam they are gone gone gone.

I'm not a moderator but so far in the past few months I have reported a number of these free loaders Spam artests and it usually takes a matter of 30 minuites and the so call new member and their account are history. Tonight as I was reading another one tried to sell their goods and I sent in an e-mail to admin and it was less than 2 minuites later they were gone so I figured there are a number of us Bashing spammers because I don't think they even got my E- mail before it was deleted. The Moderators are right on top of these forums 24/7 or we the members as a group are just fast at taking out the trash.

I agree Dan

Mr. Incredible is doing a bang up job.  I see these spammers and I wish I could zap them and I think...I should report that, and before I get to it they are often gone.

This is a top notch forum IMO, with an excellent signal to noise ratio. And compared to what I see elsewhere it requires little moderation.

I've only seen 1 spammer. . .

Yes,

The moderators are doing a great job.  I have only seen one spammer the whole time I have been on the forums.

No doubt about it the mods rock!  The spammer I just saw is already gone!

Only 1!  It would seem you don't actually live here at the MRH forums like I do. [wink]

I've seen quite a few and they might be getting a bit more frequent.

Since they get zapped almost as fast as they post it's mostly funny anyway.

Spammers

This site must have administrators who do not sleep. They are quick to delete Spam. Great job.

I belong to the Bachmann forums and there has been a porno Spam there for the past few hours. I and some others have reported it but apparently there are no administrators looking at their emal for a report.

If I mention my 24VA Dual Cab, would I be spamming?

I can't agree more on the spammers. I sent Joe an email saying I was going to put a link to MRH in my eBay train listings and he replied that I could then come here and put a link to my ebay. Unfortunately, I discovered soon thereafter that I could not put the link to here in ebay. So, I'm not sure if the offer to link here is still appropriate?

I did however keep one listing on Craigslist for the entire week under the "free" section... whether these are allowed is debatable..

We've added some new antispam features

We've added some new anti-spam features today.

If you see a post that's clearly spam, you can mark it as spam at the bottom. Just click the link and let us know it's spam. The new features include a "learning" process that over time should catch the spam before it gets posted.

You all marking any spam you see will help this site get smarter at identifying spam!

Marked as spam.

Maybe not the best feature, as I guess I've been marked as spam, as I can't post.

Is the cure worse than the disease?

So far our new spam filters have identified a dozen or so legitimate posts as spam.

One of the ideas with the spam filter is to reduce the moderation load by having the system catch spam for us. However, if we need to keep releasing legitimate posts repeatedly as not spam, that's certainly NOT reducing the moderation load.

Now, it will take some time to train the spam filter on what is and is not spam - we recognize that. So we'll keep the filters turned on for now - but we've raised the spam bar quite a bit to see if we can get it to let more legitimate posts through.

Obviously, if it conitnues to make things miserable for the legitimate posters, then we'll turn the spam filters off and just deal with the spammers as before.

I hope the spammers get everything they deserve ... sheesh what a pain.

How, Where?

Where is it that we can click to report a post as spam?  I can't seem to find it...

Should be a link at the bottom of the post

I zapped those two... and probably a couple others as well.

Note: I'm automatically suspicious of addresses with six periods in them - and ones from Russia.

Should be a link

I agree, there should be, but there isn't...is it only visible to staff perhaps?

Could be.

I'll see if I figure it out.

You're right....

Joe,

Non-admin users don't see the "Report/mark as Spam" links at the bottom of posts. Howtoblog isn't an admin, and I can't see them when logged in as him.

It's Sunday...

It's not like it's the end of the world Jeff. [smile]

I'd like a zapper like you have so I could zap spammers too! Too bad it's probably military issue...

Edit: lol, that was quick.  Lucky guess on my part.  Just make me an admin user and it'll be all fixed! [grin]

I'm willing to deputize some of you regulars

I'm willing to deputize some of you regulars with a new role I'm calling "moderator".

Mainly, it's the superuser role, plus the ability to edit any thread post, delete any thread post, and mark any thread post as spam.

The moderator role is what I would call being part of the "anti-spam patrol" or to delete the occassional accidental duplicate post. It is NOT intended to be used to lord it over anyone on here.

Make sense?

Who would be willing to get deputized as an anti-spam moderator? If you abuse this role by lording it over others on here, we'll remove you from the role (just so you know).

Go to the contact us - other form and let us know you're a regular on here and willing to be an antispam moderator.
