I've been playing around with SCARM and trying to figure out what direction I want to take my eventual layout when it comes time to permanently fix it to the board. This is my current, temporary set up: https://flic.kr/p/pMCa3C Originally I intended to get a second powerpack and train to run on the inner line and call it quits. But forget that! I'm hooked and want a permanent layout. I'd rather forgo the second power pack and train and save up for the DCC System. In the meantime, I thought I'd pick up the Kato V7 set to add to my layout to utilize all the track I own. Phase II: https://flic.kr/p/qGksFw That will hold me over for while I plan the real layout. I'm still getting used to the geometry of Kato Unitrack but this is something I whipped up quickly. The Inverted Amherst: https://flic.kr/p/qsbk8a My Wants include: *Two mainlines for both commuter and freight traffic *A road that intersects the track once as an underpass and again with a railway crossing gate system (Walther's Art Deco Underpass; not sure what crossing gate system to get with working lights and gate arm for DCC) *A suburban downtown main street and commuter station (Scenic Woodlands Town set and Kato North American Passenger Station) *A generic factory industry in the city (kitbashed Walther's Machine Shop) *A rock quarry (Walther's Glacier Gravel Co.) First of all, does this look like a solid start to meet my intended goals? If so, do I still have room to incorporate things like industry spurs and a small railyard without interfering with my desired structures and scenery? I'm more of a watch the trains run kind of guy but I wouldn't mind learning more about railroad design and incorporating some of these elements on my layout. Feedback and tips welcome. This is a long ways off so I've got plenty of time.

Try each, see what works

The Kato unitrack allows you to reconfigure the layout fairly easily.  you have enough room to satisfy that list.

Try adding in the buildings as footprints, just the outline, and see if they fit.
