Here it is, the quiet release

Well, here it is - the "quiet release" of the new MRH issue format. If you find anything that's clearly amiss, please let us know so we can fix it before the big massive come-and-get-it release on Monday, Jan 5th.

Fixed version posted

The missing image and several other nits have been corrected, and the latest version posted. I'm hearing from the staff there's a few more changes coming yet, but this is getting pretty close if you want to re-download the latest-and-greatest so far.

Still have the original version

but if it hasn't already been fixed, I get a database error when clicking on the Tony's Train Exchange ad.

Tonys Trains site is down ... Google Tonys Trains and click the link that comes up - Database error. We can't do anything to fix that from here - so the magazine is fine.

Imbedded version

I'm confused as to what is imbedded and what is not. I really look forward to Ken Patterson's column and especially his video each month. It seems that sometimes his video is sometimes included and sometimes not in the imbedded download. Is this correct? If so, I would suspect that it has to do with size (this month's was very large) but It was confusing when I was unable to play it(my home internet is metered so I download the issue at work). Is a video keyed so I know that it will be streaming or imbedded?

A small point, but I was just wondering.

Embedded edition

Embedded edition has the video stored inside the PDF so you don't need an internet connection to view the video. However, you need to use Adobe Reader to view the Embedded edition, since we don't test it or certify it to work with any other PDF reader. The Embedded edition does not work on mobile devices at all, only on PC and Macs (if you use Adobe Reader). On the Mac, you can't view the video in the Embedded edition with the built-in Mac PDF Preview app - you have to use Adobe Reader on the Mac with the Embedded edition.

Hi, maybe I did not understand correctly, was there going to be a kindle version available?

Thanks,

ePub3 and Kindle

Unfortunately, we've hit some pretty major snags around ads in an ePub3, so for now, we need to abandon the intention of going to ePub3 with the magazine. Maybe the format will eventually get there, but without ads that can be displayed in all their glory in an ePub3, we can't offer an ad-funded publication for free in ePub3 format. This then takes us back to our eBooks, which we do offer in ePub3 and Kindle format. But they don't have ads and they're not free, so it works. Maybe someday ePub3 will support complex hotspots and links in ads properly on any screen size, but for now, it's a no-go.
