I have been working on the VIA Rail yard and shops lately.  Here are some preliminary photos of the area, taken with a cell phone to check for details.  Once complete I will photograph again with a better camera and a backdrop.

In this photo, two siding have been assigned for trains, waiting for service.  Power supply units are between the engines, complete with four electrical hookups each. An E8 sits on track 1 and a VIA F40 in the Home Hardware scheme is on track 2.

The shop area is busy, with an F7B moving out of Bay 1, while a full dome car and coach are receiving maintenance in Bays 2 and 3.

The lights on the building are made from gluing small jewels to strips of styrene cut at a 45 degree angle.  I have created all of the signs on the building, laying them out on my computer, then printing them on photo paper.  I use a black marker to color the edges.

I still have some work to do, replacing the sign over the doorway, "dirtying" the concrete pad and soot stains over the bays.  I will also add a few weeds in the nooks and crannies.

You'd never know

that this is N scale if it wasn't for the people.  As a fellow N scaler, I know the crispness of these castings are rather low.  Great job on the signs, and the jewels for lights is an excellent Idea for sure.  Please keep us updated with more pictures.

Thanks Michael for the

Thanks Michael for the comments, I enjoy the "expanded" possibilities that N Scale provides. So much more can fit in to a small space.

Cheers

Roger

I'm not sure a "better"

I'm not sure a "better" camera will mean "better" pictures in this case.

I love shooting my trains with my iPhone. Because the lens is off-set into a corner, I can get photos (like yours...) nearly at eye level for N scale people. You're going to be at at least second to third story height with a more "conventional" camera.

I'm definitely going to have to make a run to Michaels and get some of those "jewels". This is the second time I've seen them mentioned for making industrial lights in N - I'm wanting to make some pole lights for my industrial Inglenook module, and they look like a perfect way to do it. I'm probably going to set them up to run off battery power (perhaps rechargeable C cells...) and avoid the whole tangle of cords issue.

Thanks barr_ceo for the

Thanks barr_ceo for the comments. You're correct, I purchased the jewels for the industrial lights from Michaels. For N Scale I had to get the smallest they had. They come on a peel and stick strip an are just over 2mm, so provide a one foot scale light. Michaels also has a round jewel the same size, these I have used to make pole lights by cutting the tops off telephone poles and leaving the lower cross bar. I amply glue the jewel to the two ends of the cross bar, providing a conical shape above the jewel.  I then paint the glue dab silver for the light reflector. So far it has turned out well. I will also be experimenting with shorter lights for the passenger station, when I reach that stage.

Thanks again,

Roger
