Brad Ketchen OSCR

Hello,

Does anyone know of a kit similar to this road salt building:

My original plan is to model the facility on the left with a Pikestuff Quonset Hut building:

However, the building in the first picture is the kind of facility I see around Southern Ontario where I model.

Thanks in advance, and Happy Holidays everyone!

cheers,

Brad

I found an elevation drawing

I found an elevation drawing of what appears to be a typical structure from a Canadian company that manufactures these.  Perhaps you can contact them for more info so you can scratchbuild one.  It doesn't look terribly difficult; despite the odd shape there are no windows and only two or three large openings each with an awning/portal (one opening is quite common)

Scrathbuild

Thanks Jeff. I would start by building the base/foundation that is sort of similar to both of the structures I posted. Then I would have to find or make some sort of cone structure to place on top. Thanks for the info. It would make for a great scratchbuild project - the first for me.

It looks like you could build

It looks like you could build it with formers and ribs like a stick and tissue model airplane. You just need a template for the curved vertical studs, and the formers are all circular in shape, decreasing in size as you go up to the peak.  Look forward to seeing the finished model.

Shouldn't be too hard to build a model  if you can go look at a real one. The foundation walls would define the footprint and the framing pattern is visible thru the sheathing. what is that covering material?  As JG said it looks like old school model airplane construction.......DaveB

Looks like the same thing I

Looks like the same thing I saw all over the Midwest US. Illinois in particular.

we call it the beehive

I've got one of those right down the street from me. In Rhode Island. ( 1 mile). Tends to pollute the ground water. And yes it would make an interesting laser project. I'll try to post some better photos of it.

Where I grew up...

Just north of Guelph, these structures usually appeared in groups of at least two.

We called them "salt boobs".

With the focus on RR structures

I think these have been generally ignored by the kit makers. But the type described in this thread seems to be common all over North America. I know they are prevalent all along the East Coast Virginia to Maine and every state in between.

Salty Minnesota

Modeling northern Minnesota. Modeling Minnesota roads, which have more salt than three of the seven seas. I have seen these all over our area too. Wooden buildings for holding road salt is a very northern type landmark.

I'll take a kit Bill,....or two. Salt boobs..... Hmmmmmmm

Haha Bill

Yes, in pairs of two we used to reference Dolly Parton on road trips.

Looks like i've got my work cut out for me. Will be an interesting project to work on and with other MRH members including Bill.

Laughing in a Nostalgic Way

Bill, I'm glad to know that it wasn't just in my part of southern Ontario that we called them that. You made me laugh on a stressful day. Thanks!
