Test drove my KNK Zing cutter for a first spin.

This cutter idea is great, cut a simple shape in .011 sytrene and it came out crisp and clean.

Love it when things work when I don't know what the heck I'm doing.

Gonna love this machine.

.030 Thick Styrene

Had to finish cut with a razor blade but still a whole lot easier than cutting the star out by hand.

Been Trying to Cut Styrene for many years

The .010 styrene is from 1961 after Al Armitage's articles in MR, the .030 styrene is from 1985. Try to find styrene sheets in 1961.

Did the star at 2:00 last night after reading this article:

Thinking about how difficult and the time required to cut that star out by hand, this machine is amazing and I have only done two short sessions.

I first saw this mentioned in

I first saw this mentioned in the Cricut Explore thread and have a lot of questions...

What is the total cost of ownership for one of these; what other stuff did you need to buy to get up and running

How do you set the depth of cut?  Can it be driven from GCode (I own and know Cut2D and would love to be able to transfer those skills over)?

What is the thickest material that you can pass through it?

Cutting ,040 and Scribed Siding

The Zing has three rollers so small sheets of plastic can be fed without the cutting mat.

Tried .040 with the star again:

Tried a 3x4 .040 piece of scribed plastic to see if it would be possible to cut a window opening. There is a small groove on the front of the Zing so the plastic sheet can be accurately aligned with the x-y axis.

The Zing can use a pen to dry run the cuts, here is a square on scribed siding:

The blade starting point can be manually applied.

If you have questions, the "Google" is you friend, most of the stuff is out there.

This is only my fourth session with my Zing.

.020 Styrene thru the rollers

It is great to be able to cut styrene without using the backing sheet. Gives more control.

Gotta get on the Cad and develop something railroady.

Still don't know what I am doing, should read some more of the manual.

KNK vs. Cricut

Nice Harold.

I've looked over the Explore from Cricut but don't like the fact you have to be on-line to use it with their software.   The Explore can be bought for less than $180 so that was what got my interest.

Can the KNK Zing cut 1/16" basswood?

Here is a material list

Haven't tried basswood but it is on this list:

Perusing the net, can't believe this cutting thing is such a large hobby, all the info is out there.

Cutting Wood

Found this on the "Make the Cut" site:

http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/30608/basswood-instead-of-balsa

On one of the forums "if you can cut it with an X-acto knife it can be cut on a Zing".

Got my engraving tool

First attempt at scribing:

1/32 apart, done with two passes will try with only one.

Remember when I did this 30 years ago:

On30 box car, all hand scribed before Evergreen, in the good old days.

Cleaned the Scribing Up

Found my brass brush and cleaned the particles out of the grooves:

That is about 7x magnified.

"7x magnified" was fine in

"7x magnified" was fine in print when you could be sure everyone was looking a the same size picture, but I'm afraid it doesn't mean much when you've got people looking at the photo on everything from a cell phone to a 27" (or more) desktop. What's the spacing between the lines?

They are .032 as stated in

They are .032 as stated in the earlier post.

If you save the image and look at it full size it is 7x.
