Has anyone experienced replacing a fried motor on an Atlas N Scale GP 40 ? Getting a hold of Atlas is ridiculous. Any info will be appreciated.

Motor Replacement

To replace the motor you have to first remove the body fom the chassie.

Now over a large pan or dish,"lots of small parts" remove the fuel tank and then if it not DCC remove the two light boards. then remove the screws on each end of the chassie. the two halves will now come apart and here is where the pan comes in handy.  There will be two spacers on each end that might  fall out along with the wheels and two brass pickups. Next you will need to remove the worm drive on each side of the motor, then pry the motor along with a black plastic motor housing out.

Replace the motor and reverse the process

If you have DCC then you will have to remove the wires on the motor because the motor is isolated from the chassie on DCC

When looking for a new motor just E-Bay Atlas n scale motor and serch for one for the GP40

Just take it slow and watch where parts are located ,then it is a pretty simple process

Thanks

Dean thanks for the info. I will look into it. Last weekend my motor fried for some reason. It was not running. It is DCC and all of a sudden, smoke started to come out. So I am still debating of replacing the motor or take the motor out and leave it as a "dummy" Engine.

You might want to go over the

You might want to go over the DCC chip/board with a magnifying glass first, before you dive into replacing the motor. It might have been the chip that fried.

cHIP BOARD

Barr, I replaced the chip board to make sure it was not the board and irt wasn't. So it is the motor. Thank you for the pointer.

EBay

AzBaja, I believe you are right. If I decide to replace it I might go that route. If I decide to use it as a Dummy engine I might just remove the motor and let it free-roll. In matter of fact there is one in EBay right now for $59.00 that I might jump to it. Thank You.
