When did data markings such as capacity, empty weight, etc... Become maditory of freight cars?

Im adding decals to some late 1890-1910 wood box cars and from the photos I can find online, it seams some cars had markings others did not.

Markings

Trent,

By the early 1880's reporting marks began showing up. To compliment data marks were also added. By 1890, most cars had data to include:

Length

Load Weight

Capacity

M.C.B Coupler

M.C.B Friction Draft Gear

Janey Coupler

"X" x "X" Journals, whereas "X" are the numbers, such as 5x7

Air Brake

Westinghouse Air Brake

New York Air Brake

Gould Coupler

Fitted with Steam Pipes

"Return To"

"No Grain"

"Post No Advertisements"

Various Builders Identification Marks

Transformation of reporting marks between legit roads and private roads did not change until after the 1911 Safety Act, when shortly thereafter private road cars were identified with an "X" on the end. Example: American Oil Association was reported after 1911 as A.O.X. Prior was simply A.O. Assn.

Hope this helps,

Manny
