I have a United models brass 2-8-2 with a gearbox issue. The bearing on the input shaft has "spun". the bearing turns with the shaft intermittently and makes a lot of noise in the process. The gearbox housing looks like a white metal casting. I'm thinking I could drill a hole and insert a screw to stop the bearing from rotating. Anubody have any advice? How about an online source for tiny screws? Thanks in advance

How's 00-90?

MicroTrains and Walthers sell 00-90 screws, as well as the associated drills and taps. That's about as small as is going to be practical for non-nanotech use!

Drilling the white metal casting will be easy.

Drilling the bearing, though... that's probably a decent quality steel. Might be easier (not to mention less frustrating due to broken drills and taps...) to make sure it's completely clean of all lubricants, then epoxy or CA it in place.

Loctite make several

Loctite make several different products to take care of this type of problem.  The more common/popular types are available at auto parts and big box stores.

Try Scale Hardware

http://scalehardware.com/

They currently have hex head bolts as small as .5 mm and slot head bolts down to 1mm.

I always use Microfasteners

I always use Microfasteners for all my super small hardware & tools. http://www.microfasteners.com/

They are much cheaper than buying the small bag of Hob-Bits hardware plus they have a full line ot micro tools.
