A very, very rare sight. Two WWI vintage protected Simplex locomotives in operational condition. Powered by 7 litre, 4-cylinder petrol engines yielding 40hp.  Leighton-Buzzard Light Railway "Twin Turtles Day", May 2004. I was fortunate to obtain ticket #001 for the event. #3090 was fully restored by the " Salvage Squad" TV programme crew in the UK.

Trenches

Yes, these locomotives were used to deliver equipment to the forward positions.

The steam locos were kept at the depots or for movements between staging yards; the exhaust plumes were too easy to shoot at.

In the end, US, UK, French and captured German equipment were all in use by the Allies to ensure that ammo, food, and other supplies were in a constant stream to the troops.
