Haleiwa Hotel

I am really excited about adding a hotel to the branch and found some great pictures for inspiration. The bad news is that O scale is so damned big. The image below might better be on the backdrop OR I just attach the big lanai to the photo at a slightly smaller scale (1:64?) with people inside to give a 3-D effect.

The actual little station was down across the water so the guests had to hoof it up to the hotel so this wouldn't be a stretch. Since I want my "up country" it may be renamed the Haleuka (House up hill) Hotel.

Anybody else building hotels?

Which ?

Neil, there seems to be a number of Haleiwa Hotels. Are your referring to the Oahu Northern peninsula. Do you have a picture to post here - it would be nice to see what you might be modeling.

Did you lose "The image below".

Photo didn't show on mine

Neil: Your photo shows an error when I try to view it; have a link?

I had the front of a hotel on a previous modular layout; the main features were a circular drive, several windows implying a dining room and lobby, and sign identifying the name of the hotel.  I will see if I can find a photo.  Anyway, I agree that an entire hotel might take up quite a bit of real estate - but I bet with the front wall or corner, lanai and a sign or two, you can imply one and still conserve layout space!

Hope that works

Sorry guys. I give up using Chrome on my iPad. The cut and paste doesn't work and resizing is awkward - I'll stick with Safari for now. The image is dark but should look ok when viewed full size.

Yes, this was on the north shore of Oahu but razed in the mid 70's.  The town of Haleiwa (house of the iwa bird, whatever that was) will become Haleuku (house of fleas?) or, Haleuka (up-country house) since the misses runs our hotel the idea of "uku's" is repulsive in Hawaii (usually refers to head lice).  Ukulele is literally dancing fleas as the fingers seem so active when playing that little instrument.

I really like the idea of modeling the front rounded balcony back to the lanai. A partial roof always seems to end abruptly at the backdrop so maybe add some lanai columns and a gutter and see what it looks like.

Royalty visited here so there are some potential vignettes and tales ala Verne Niner style

Quick Mock-up

I started laying out the new siding and location for the Hotel but realize that this was more like a comfortable, albeit large, home with average ceiling heights. My drawing seems WAY too tall. The roof seemed fussy on the original so I thought I'd do something a little different - not quite happy yet.

... and my sloppy version (only drew half):

mage(22).jpg  Regardless the design it really needs some compression or, maybe be built at 1:64 (S scale) to make it feel less dominant.

I welcome all suggestions - thick skinned.

Neil, ...

I just now saw you post of the original pic. Quite nice - happy it worked out. Thanks for the etymology on the Hawaiian language, quite educational. Yes, Haleuka sounds good. Not really a long walk up - looks quite navigable. Although my pike is to be a bit more modern, I do have an appreciation of the earlier architecture. This "does it" for me. Hope you can successfully complete it. Keep in mind that "close enough" is a valid property. I can see from your sketch that it does resemble the original sufficiently to give the illusion of the real place.
