Hey guys!

Currently in the process of re-motoring a NEW ho Athearn RTR BNSF Dash 9-44CW, i have Genesis HEX flywheels on a kato motor. any tips with re-motoring a locomotive?, at the moment it is still a little noisy. Is there any special way to attach the flywheels onto the motor shaft? or is it pretty self explanatory.

Also i have been in contact with Athean and they have been very helpful. They are going to send me a new set of trucks for the locomotive, as i explained the noise issues i was having. Nothing is being done about the motor however still helpful.

Nick.

Noise

Kato motors are generally very quiet.

You are seeing a vibration and thus noise due to a balance issue.

You have to do a field balance of the rotor system.  What you have are three asymmetric pieces that are assembled together into one rotor.  The motor rotor is probably balanced by itself, but the fly wheels are not.

Hoping for a simple solution I would proceed in the following steps:

1- Put a mark on the inside surface of each fly wheel.

2- run the motor and observe the noise and vibration.

3 - rate the condition and write it down.

4- rotate the flywheels so the marks move a eighth of a turn from the last set.  In this process hold one of the wheels fixed with the motor rotor.  The rotation should be done by removing the wheel your trying to move.

5- repeat step 2 - 4 until you have completed one rotation.

pick the best of these.  Hopefully this will solve the problem.

The issue could involve the wheel that did not move in the above process.  You can check that by reversing the wheel that moves holding the previous best location for the fixed fly wheel.

Good luck,

.

So many trains, so little time,

Larry

Cheers Larry!

Thank you Larry!

I had read something about flywheel balancing so i wasn't too sure if it had to be done every time you put new flywheels on a motor. I will do these steps and let you know how i go. I milled the frame yesterday using the trusty dremmel, and that helped a little with noise and function as the motor now sits lower.

Cheers
