John Kennedy

John Kennedy:,

I am dreaming of building a shelf layout (perhaps three scenes or towns) for a short line which hauled coal from mines in the foothills of ghe Alberta Rockies to the Canadian National main line west of Edmonton. The time period would be roughly 1900-1940. Equipment was small: 4:4:0, 2:6:0 and small gondolas. I expect I would join the scenes with a helix at each end as the trains climb into and out of the mountains.

I would like to build in N-scale (only one side of a small room may be available). Does anyone build locos or rolling stock for that vintage? Where should I look?

@ John

Bachmann has some ten wheelers with DCC that you can find on eBay at good prices.  Also, if I remember right there is a mogul too.  Roundhouse made some too. Get on eBay to do some searching. Atlas some 1880s steamers as well.

Era

I would pick an era of 1920-1940 or 1900-1910 rather than 1900-1940.  There was a huge sea change in engines and cars between the two eras.  1900-1910 there will be more wood cars, engines will tend to have slide valves and oil headlamps.  1920-1940 the cars will be more steel or steel underframes, engines will have electric headlights and piston valves.  You will find waaaaay more equipment suitable for the 1920-1940 era than the earlier era.

Coal Branch equipment

thanks to all of you. I think my most important atep right now (aside from clearing out all the junk from  the little room in the basement) is to do some research. Lynn Zelmer did a lot of research about 40 years ago. He gave me copies of much of it, but I still haven't studied it all. I can see the importance of selecting an era. 1930s and 1940s would certainly give me much material to model and information which is much more accessible. Thanks for all the encouraging help.
